Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel on Lake Shore Drive was glowing with the light of three massive crystal chandeliers. Over four hundred of Chicago’s most influential figures—politicians, Supreme Court justices, corporate CEOs, and high-ranking Syndicate leaders—were gathered for the annual Vale Enterprises Charity Gala.

Sensational jazz music drifted through the air as liveried waiters carried trays of vintage champagne through the crowd.

At the top of the grand marble staircase leading into the ballroom stood Gabriel Vale and Claire Mercer.

Gabriel looked towering and imposing in a custom black tux, his dark hair slicked back, his arm wrapped securely around Claire’s waist.

Beside him, Claire was absolute royalty.

She wore a breathtaking, custom emerald-green silk velvet gown that hugged her voluptuous frame with magnificent grace. A multi-carat diamond necklace shimmered against her collarbone, and her hazel eyes were bright, fierce, and utterly radiant. She held a glass of champagne in her hand, conversing easily with a sitting federal judge and the CEO of Boeing.

There was not a single person in the room who looked at Claire Mercer and saw a victim. They saw the formidable Chief Financial Officer of Vale International—a woman whose brilliant financial strategies had doubled the syndicate’s legal logistics revenue in twelve months, and whose fierce loyalty to her workers had made her beloved across the entire Midwest.

“Miss Mercer,” the federal judge smiled warmly, raising his glass to her. “Your latest infrastructure proposal for the Port of Chicago passed the Senate committee unanimously this afternoon. Outstanding work.”

“Thank you, Judge Harrison,” Claire replied with a smooth, regal smile. “We are committed to building a transparent, efficient transit network for the entire state.”

As the judge stepped away to join his wife, Gabriel leaned down close to Claire’s ear, his hand resting warm against the small of her back.

“You handled him beautifully, my love,” Gabriel whispered, his voice dark and affectionate.

Claire turned her head, looking up at him with a mischievous, confident glint in her hazel eyes. “I learned from the best, Gabriel.”

A soft chime sounded across the ballroom’s sound system, announcing the opening of the main dance floor.

Gabriel extended his hand toward her with courtly grace. “May I have this dance, CFO Mercer?”

Claire placed her gloved hand in his, her smile radiant. “It would be my pleasure, Mr. Vale.”

They walked down the grand marble staircase together, the crowd parting respectfully as the king and queen of Chicago’s underground stepped onto the polished dance floor.

As the orchestra began to play a slow, magnificent waltz, Gabriel took her in his arms, spinning her effortlessly beneath the crystal lights.

Claire rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart, looking out at the glittering ballroom around them.

Two years ago, she had been a terrified, barefoot woman sitting on a filthy warehouse floor, bleeding onto concrete, apologizing for taking up space in a world that had used and abused her.

Tonight, she was safe. She was powerful. She was cherished by the most feared man in the Midwest, ruling an empire built on intelligence, strength, and unbreakable loyalty.

Gabriel tightened his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest as they whirled across the floor, his lips brushing softly against her ear.

“You belong here, Claire,” Gabriel whispered into the music. “With me. Forever.”

Claire looked up into his steel-gray eyes, her hazel eyes shining with absolute love and peace, her smile outshining every crystal light in the room.

“Forever,” Claire agreed softly.

And as the music swelled through the grand hall, the quiet girl who had once apologized for bleeding on concrete danced in the arms of the man who had given her the world—and neither of them ever looked back.
