Chapter 8 - The Remnant

While Claire and Gabriel were building a new life together in Chicago, sixty miles to the south, in a dilapidated two-story farmhouse outside Kankakee, Indiana, Richard and Evan Mercer were rotting in exile.

The house was cold, damp, and surrounded by flat, muddy cornfields that stretched to the horizon in every direction. Two armed guards in dark coats sat in an unmarked sedan parked at the end of the dirt driveway twenty-four hours a day.

Richard Mercer sat at a rusted formica kitchen table, staring at a lukewarm cup of instant coffee. His expensive suits were gone, replaced by cheap sweatpants and a faded flannel shirt. He looked twenty years older—his hair graying, his skin sagging, his hands trembling constantly.

Across from him, Evan was pacing back and forth across the linoleum floor like a caged animal, throwing empty beer cans against the wall.

“I can't take this anymore!” Evan shrieked, kicking a kitchen chair, sending it crashing to the floor. “We’re prisoners, Dad! We’re rotting in the middle of nowhere while that fat bitch is living in a penthouse in Chicago!”

“Shut up, Evan!” Richard yelled weakly, holding his head in his hands. “Shut up! If Gabriel Vale’s men hear you screaming, they’ll come in here and beat us again!”

“I don't care!” Evan raged, his face red and contorted. “Did you see the newspaper this morning?! She’s in the Chicago Business Journal! 'Claire Mercer Appointed CFO of Vale-Mercer Logistics'! She’s making hundreds of thousands of dollars! She’s driving an armored car! She stole OUR company!”

“It wasn't our company,” Richard whispered bitterly, tears leaking down his wrinkled cheeks. “It was her system. She built it. We just took credit for it.”

“You’re pathetic!” Evan spat, stepping close to his father. “You gave up! You signed those papers like a coward!”

“I signed those papers because Gabriel Vale had a gun to my head!” Richard screamed, standing up and slamming his fists on the table. “He would have put us in the river, Evan! Do you understand that?! He doesn't care about us! He cares about HER!”

Evan gritted his teeth, his eyes narrowing into venomous, desperate slits. “He’s using her. Mob guys don't care about women like Claire. As soon as he gets tired of her accounting tricks, he’ll dump her back on the street. And when he does...”

Evan reached into his pocket, pulling out a cheap burner phone he had managed to buy from a local gas station delivery driver two days ago.

“What is that?” Richard asked, his eyes widening in horror. “Evan... where did you get that? If Vale’s guards find a phone in this house—”

“I’m calling the federal prosecutor,” Evan whispered, his voice trembling with psychotic desperation. “I’m turning over the Mercer Freight digital backups I saved on my flash drive. I’m telling the FBI that Gabriel Vale extorted us, seized our company illegally, and kidnapped Claire!”

Richard went completely white. “Are you out of your mind?! If you call the FBI, Gabriel Vale will kill us both before the sun comes up!”

“The FBI will put us in witness protection!” Evan argued wildly, pressing the numbers on the phone pad. “We’ll get immunity! We’ll get our money back from Nassau! I’m not rotting in Indiana while Claire lives like a queen!”

Before Evan could press the call button, the heavy wooden front door of the farmhouse exploded inward with a deafening CRASH.

Splintered wood rained across the entryway as Marcus and four heavily armed Syndicate enforcers charged into the kitchen, their tactical shotguns raised.

Evan gasped, dropping the burner phone onto the linoleum floor.

Marcus stepped forward, his heavy tactical boot coming down directly on the cheap phone, crushing it into a dozen plastic fragments with a loud CRUNCH.

Marcus looked down at the crushed phone, then raised his steel-gray eyes to look at Evan Mercer.

“Gabriel told you what would happen if you acquired a communication device, Evan,” Marcus said, his voice flat, emotionless, and absolute.

Evan fell to his knees, screaming in terror. “No! Wait! Please! I didn't call anyone! I swear to God I didn't press send!”

Richard fell to his knees beside his son, weeping hysterically, clutching Marcus’s pants leg. “Please! Spare him! He’s just a boy! Take me instead! Please!”

Marcus didn't flinch. He gestured to his men.

“Bag them,” Marcus commanded coldly. “The boss said no second chances.”
