Chapter 8 - The Society Gala

Two months later.

The Grand Hotel Plaza’s ballroom was a sea of glittering crystal chandeliers, towering floral arrangements, and high-society elites dressed in black-tie attire. The annual Winter Charity Gala was the most prestigious event of the year, bringing together politicians, billionaires, and industry titans from across the country.

At the center of the room stood Sadi Vance.

She wore a custom floor-length gown of midnight-blue velvet that clung elegantly to her frame, paired with a simple, breathtaking diamond necklace that Roman had gifted her for their anniversary. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant updo, exposing the graceful line of her neck.

She did not look like the girl from the diner. She did not look like a survivor of poverty. She looked like royalty.

Beside her, Roman stood in a immaculate tuxedo, his hand resting casually against the small of her back. On his cuffs sat the rhodium cufflinks Sadi had bought him at the Galleria.

“Mrs. Vance,” a high-ranking city councilor said, bowing slightly as he approached them with a glass of champagne. “I was just reading about your foundation’s new initiative to fund emergency shelters for women in the city. A truly remarkable project.”

“Thank you, Councilor,” Sadi said, her voice rich, confident, and warm. “It’s a cause that is very close to my heart. No woman should ever feel like she has nowhere to go when her world collapses.”

“Indeed,” the councilor agreed respectfully. “The city is fortunate to have your leadership.”

As the councilor excused himself, Roman leaned down, his breath warm against her ear. “You stole the entire room tonight, my love.”

Sadi smiled, turning her head to look at him. “I learned from the best.”

Across the crowded ballroom, Sadi caught sight of Chloe Montgomery standing near the bar with her father. Chloe looked healthier, dressed in a tasteful silver gown. When her eyes met Sadi’s, she didn't cringe or hide. Instead, she gave Sadi a soft, respectful nod of gratitude—a quiet acknowledgment of the grace Sadi had shown her family.

Sadi returned the nod, then turned her attention back to her husband.

The past was finally where it belonged—buried beneath the weight of glass, marble, and time.
