Chapter 8 - The Cornered Snake

The corridor outside Courtroom 402 was empty as the legal teams retreated to complete the paperwork.
Cecilia stood near the tall marble windows, watching the rain fall over the city streets. The thrill of victory was still humming in her veins, but her mind was calm, steady, and clear.
"You were magnificent," a low, deep voice rasped behind her.
Dallas stepped up behind her, his large hands resting gently on her shoulders, his chest warm against her back. He leaned down, burying his face in the crook of her neck, breathing in the soft scent of her perfume.
"You didn't need me in there at all," he whispered.
"I needed you for six years," Cecilia corrected softly, turning in his arms to face him. "You built the foundation, Dallas. You gave me the space to become strong enough to fight."
"You were always strong, Cecilia," he rasped, his hand coming up to gently thumb her lower lip. "You just needed to stop hiding."
Before he could kiss her, heavy footsteps echoed down the marble hallway.
Lorenzo Costa stepped around the corner. He had sent his legal team ahead; he stood alone, his dark suit slightly rumpled, his eyes wild with a bitter, violent humiliation.
Marcus and two security guards instantly moved to intercept him, but Dallas held up a single hand, stopping his men.
"Let him speak," Dallas growled, stepping in front of Cecilia, his frame instantly shifting into protective posture.
Lorenzo stopped ten feet away. He looked at Dallas, then at Cecilia standing proudly behind him.
"You think you won, don't you, secretary?" Lorenzo spat out, his refined Miami charm completely gone, replaced by the ugly venom of a beaten criminal. "You think because you found a loophole in a courtroom, you're free?"
"I don't think I'm free, Lorenzo," Cecilia said, stepping out from behind Dallas to stand right beside him, hand in hand. "I know I am."
Lorenzo sneered, reaching inside his dark jacket. "Your father was a rat, Cecilia. He died begging me for time. And you... you belong in Miami under my—"
CLICK.
The sound was tiny, but it froze the blood in Lorenzo’s veins.
Dallas had drawn a silver-plated snub-nosed revolver from his shoulder holster so fast it seemed to appear out of thin air. He held it aimed precisely between Lorenzo’s eyes, his finger resting lightly on the trigger.
The air in the marble corridor went down to sub-zero temperatures.
"Finish that sentence, Lorenzo," Dallas rasped, his voice a low, terrifying vibration that sounded like iron grinding against rock. "Give me one reason to end this six-year debt right here on the courthouse floor."
Lorenzo’s hand froze inside his jacket. His breathing turned shallow and fast. He looked into Dallas Russo’s eyes and saw no hesitation, no legal restraint, no corporate CEO.
He saw a predator who would kill him without blinking if he took one more step toward the woman beside him.
"You're crazy, Russo," Lorenzo choked out, slowly pulling his empty hand out of his jacket and raising both hands in surrender.
"You have one hour to leave Chicago," Dallas said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "If my spotters see your car in this state after 12:00 PM... I won't use a courtroom. Do you understand me?"
Lorenzo swallowed hard. He backed away slowly, step by step, until he reached the marble stairwell, turning and fleeing down the stairs like a beaten dog.
Dallas slowly lowered the weapon, engaging the safety lock before slipping it back into his shoulder holster. He took a long, quiet breath, clearing the rage from his posture.
He turned slowly to look at Cecilia, his gray-blue eyes filled with sudden, anxious concern.
"I'm sorry," Dallas whispered, looking down at his hands. "You shouldn't have seen that side of me."

Cecilia walked up to him. She didn't flinch. She reached up, taking his cold face into both of her warm hands, and pulled his head down to kiss him fiercely on the mouth.
"I love every side of you, Dallas Russo," she whispered against his lips. "The CEO, the guard dog... and the man who saved my life."
