Chapter 9 - A NEW BEGINNING

Three months later, the bitter Chicago winter had finally broken, yielding to the bright, warm sunshine of early spring.

At Chicago General Hospital, the sun streamed through the large windows of a luxurious private corner suite. Tommy Bennett sat up in bed, looking healthy and full of life. Color had returned to his cheeks, and for the first time in years, he was laughing freely as he played a video game on a brand-new console mounted on the wall.

A top specialist in a white coat walked into the room, holding a clipboard with a smile on his face.

“Well, Tommy,” the doctor announced, looking at the latest test results. “Your body has accepted the new treatment regimen exceptionally well. Your kidney function has stabilized at eighty percent. You’re being discharged today.”

Tommy dropped the controller, his eyes wide with joy. “Are you serious, Doc? I get to go home?”

“You get to go home,” the doctor confirmed with a warm nod.

In the corner of the room, Khloe stood wearing a beautiful floral spring dress, tears of pure happiness glinting in her eyes. She hugged her arms around herself, feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude.

The heavy oak door of the hospital suite opened, and Victor Russo stepped inside. He wore a crisp light-grey suit, his dark hair neatly styled, looking every bit the powerful, noble businessman. Behind him, two guards carried several boxes of Tommy’s belongings.

Tommy looked at Victor with deep respect and admiration. Over the past three months, Victor had visited the hospital regularly, bringing Tommy games, books, and even hiring private tutors so he wouldn't fall behind in school.

“Hey, Victor!” Tommy cheered. “Doc says I’m getting discharged today!”

Victor walked over to the bed, a soft smile appearing on his usually stern face. He reached out and ruffled Tommy’s dark hair. “I know. The car is waiting downstairs. We’re going home.”

“To our old apartment?” Tommy asked.

Victor looked over at Khloe, his slate-grey eyes filled with warmth and devotion. “No, Tommy. To the estate. A new wing has been renovated just for you.”

Tommy’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Awesome! Can I get a dog?”

“We’ll discuss the dog,” Victor chuckled, turning his attention to Khloe.

Khloe walked over to Victor, placing her hand gently in his larger one. He pulled her close, pressing a soft kiss against her hair as Tommy made a exaggerated gagging noise from the bed.

An hour later, the sleek black sedan pulled up the winding driveway of the Russo estate. The snow was completely gone, replaced by lush green lawns and blooming flower beds.

The estate no longer looked like an icy, terrifying bunker. The heavy iron guards were still present, but the feeling of cold isolation had vanished. The windows were open, allowing the warm spring breeze to fill the echoing halls.

Inside the foyer, Mrs. Gable stood waiting with a genuine smile on her face—a sight that would have seemed impossible months ago.

“Welcome home, Master Thomas,” Mrs. Gable said warmly, bowing slightly. “Your room in the East Wing has been fully prepared according to Mr. Russo’s instructions.”

“Thanks, Mrs. Gable!” Tommy shouted, running up the grand staircase to explore his new quarters.

Khloe and Victor stood alone in the grand foyer.

Victor turned to Khloe, reaching into his suit pocket and pulling out a small velvet box.

Khloe’s breath hitched in her throat. Her heart began to race.

Victor didn't drop to one knee—he was a Don, after all—but he took her hand in his, looking down at her with a raw, intense sincerity that made her eyes fill with tears.

He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a stunning ring featuring a flawless emerald surrounded by radiant diamonds.

“Five months ago, I made a rule that no woman would ever share my bed or my life,” Victor said quietly, his voice deep and steady. “I thought isolation was the only way to stay safe. But then a quiet, fierce maid collapsed on my mattress because she was working herself to death for her brother.”

He lifted the ring from the box, holding it between his fingers.

“You broke every rule I ever made, Khloe. You brought light into a house that had been dead for years. You saved my life, and you showed me that living without love isn't living at all.”

Victor looked directly into her brown eyes. “I don't want you as my maid, Khloe. I want you as my wife. I want you to rule this empire alongside me.”

Khloe looked at the breathtaking ring, then up at the man who had transformed from a terrifying mafia boss into the love of her life.

“Yes,” Khloe whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face. “Yes, Victor! A thousand times yes!”

Victor slipped the emerald ring onto her finger, pulling her into his arms and kissing her deeply as the sunlight streamed through the grand glass windows of the estate, illuminating a home that was no longer empty.
