Chapter 9 - THE UNBROKEN BOND

The aftermath of the attack was swift and absolute.
Donald Mercer was dragged away in handcuffs directly to a prison hospital unit, facing charges of armed terrorism, kidnapping, attempted murder, and racketeering. Vivian Mercer was arrested hours later at a luxury hotel in Manhattan, charged as an accomplice to extortion and attempted murder. The Mercer family empire collapsed completely overnight, their names erased from polite society, their assets seized by the federal government.
DeLuca House underwent a massive security overhaul, but inside its walls, warmth and healing took root.
One month after the attack, on a mild, sunny February morning, a silver handicap-accessible van pulled up the long driveway of the estate.
Claire stood on the front terrace, wrapped in a warm white coat—a coat Roman had personally had custom-made for her from the finest cashmere. Roman stood beside her, his arm wrapped securely around her waist.
The side door of the van opened, and a young woman in a wheelchair was lowered down the ramp.
"Lily!" Claire cried out, tears of joy streaming down her face as she ran down the steps.
"Claire!" Lily called out, her face lighting up with a radiant smile.
The two sisters embraced tightly on the driveway, holding each other for a long moment, weeping tears of relief and joy. Lily had been transferred from the Connecticut facility to a top-tier private rehabilitation clinic just ten minutes away from the estate, funded entirely by Roman’s trust.
"Look at you!" Lily said, pulling back to look at her sister. "You look so happy! So healthy!"
"I am, Lily. I really am," Claire smiled through her tears.
She turned, holding out her hand to Roman, who stepped down the stairs to join them.
"Lily, this is Roman," Claire introduced, her voice full of pride and affection.
Lily looked up at the tall, imposing man who controlled the most powerful family in the state. But instead of fear, Lily saw the profound, gentle devotion in Roman’s eyes as he looked at her sister.
"Thank you, Mr. DeLuca," Lily said softly. "For saving my sister. For saving our family."
Roman crouched down so he was at eye level with Lily, offering his large hand for a gentle handshake. "You don't need to thank me, Lily. You are family now. This home is your home whenever you want to visit."
Lily smiled warmly. "I think I'm going to like it here."
That evening, the grand dining room of DeLuca House was lit once again by the crystal chandeliers.
But there was no cold political performance tonight. There were no arrogant politicians or deceptive heiresses.
The long table was set for a intimate family dinner: Claire, Lily, Mrs. Patel, Chef Alvarez, Frank (his arm in a sling, smiling broadly), and Roman at the head of the table.
For the first time in decades, laughter echoed through the grand stone walls of the mansion—genuine, warm, joyful laughter.
Roman sat back in his chair, watching Claire lean over to cut a piece of prime rib for her sister, her round face glowing under the chandelier light, her beautiful smile filling the room with light.

He realized then that the curse of DeLuca House—the cold, lonely paranoia that had consumed his father and grandfather—had been broken forever.
All because of a quiet maid who had walked into his life and taught him how to love.
