Chapter 6 - The Cracking Empire

The executive board room on the top floor of the Rossi Logistics building in South Boston was thick with cigar smoke and dark tension.

Matteo sat at the head of the massive glass conference table. He looked gaunt. Dark, purplish shadows lingered beneath his bloodshot eyes, his customized designer suits hung noticeably loose on his frame, and his dark hair was unkempt.

Sitting around the table were his eight senior capos—men who controlled the docks, the union payouts, the sports gambling rackets, and the regional distribution networks.

On the large digital screen at the wall, a series of red financial charts displayed a steep, alarming decline in quarterly revenue.

“Boss,” spoke up Dominic, a senior capo who had served Matteo’s father for twenty years. “We need to talk about the derrick shipments in Newark. The cargo has been sitting on the water for six days because the customs clearance bribes weren't authorized on time.”

“I’m handling it,” Matteo growled, not looking up from a thick stack of private investigator reports scattered across his desk.

“With all due respect, Matteo, you’re not handling it,” Dominic countered, his voice firm and devoid of the deference he usually showed. “You’ve spent four million dollars in thirty days paying private intelligence contractors, bribing port authorities for license plate sweeps, and running background checks on every person your late father ever shook hands with.”

Matteo’s head snapped up, his dark eyes flashing with a lethal, erratic light. “Are you questioning my allocation of family resources, Dominic?”

“I’m questioning your focus!” Dominic barked back, slamming his heavy hand on the table. “The Moretti family took over three of our primary gambling halls in Revere last night! They know your attention is split! Federal agents are sitting outside our dock offices every morning taking photographs! And where are you? You’re obsessing over a woman who took her money and left!”

The room went dead silent.

None of the capos had dared to speak Norah’s name in Matteo’s presence since her departure a month earlier.

Matteo stood up slowly, reaching into his waist holster.

CLACK.

He slammed his loaded Kimber .45 pistol onto the glass table, leaning forward until his face was inches from Dominic’s.

“She is my wife,” Matteo hissed, his voice trembling with an unhinged, quiet fury. “She is carrying the heir to this family. If you think for one second that I am going to let anyone step outside my circle and walk away with my legacy, you don't know who I am.”

Dominic didn't flinch, though his eyes narrowed with a deep, dangerous disappointment. “A king who burns his own kingdom to chase a ghost won't have an empire left to hand to his child, Matteo.”

Before Matteo could reply, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Arthur stepped into the room, holding a encrypted tablet. His face was gray, his forehead slick with cold sweat.

“Boss,” Arthur said, his voice breaking. “You need to see this immediately.”

Matteo swept his pistol off the table, holstered it, and strode toward the door. “What is it?”

“It’s the Department of Justice,” Arthur whispered as they walked down the private corridor toward Matteo’s office. “Ten minutes ago, a federal judge in Washington issued a grand jury indictment against our primary holding company.”

Matteo froze in the hallway. “What indictment? We cleared our financial audit three weeks ago!”

“They didn't get the records from our accountants, Matteo,” Arthur said, holding out the tablet. “Someone delivered an unencrypted digital drive directly to the Chief of the IRS Criminal Investigation Division. It contains twenty years of original shipping manifests, offshore routing codes, and secret bank ledgers detailing every cash transaction executed by your father and you.”

Matteo grabbed the tablet, his eyes scanning the digital court filings.

The level of detail was surgical. It contained precise account numbers, private ledger entries, and secret meeting transcripts that only one family line had ever possessed access to.

Marco Vance’s original ledgers.

The ledgers Norah had spent a year copying from the hidden safe in his study.

Matteo dropped the tablet. It shattered against the hard marble floor.
