Chapter 8 - The Financial Avalanche

By late spring, the collapse of the Rossi crime family was featured on the front pages of major newspapers across the nation.
Federal prosecutors had launched the largest RICO case in the history of the New England judicial district. Armed with Marco Vance’s master ledgers, federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants across sixty locations, seizing shipping terminals, luxury real estate, commercial fleets, and private bank accounts.
Matteo Rossi was no longer the feared kingpin of Boston.
He was a high-profile fugitive, forced into hiding in a cramped, damp basement apartment beneath an abandoned textile warehouse in the industrial district of Fall River.
The velvet suits and tailored silk shirts were gone, replaced by worn jeans and a plain black hoodie. His face was covered in a rough dark beard, and his once-imposing posture was bowed beneath the weight of relentless stress and paranoia.
Sitting around a wooden cable spool serving as a makeshift table were Arthur and two remaining low-level enforcers—the only men who hadn't taken federal plea deals or fled to Florida.
On the table rested three burner phones and a map of the northeastern border.
“The federal marshals frozen your last secondary account in Nassau this morning, boss,” Arthur said quietly, setting down a lukewarm cup of instant coffee. “We have less than eighty thousand dollars in physical cash left in the duffel bags.”
Matteo didn't answer. He was staring at a laptop screen connected to a high-gain directional antenna, watching a live news broadcast from the federal courthouse in Boston.
Dominic, his former senior capo, was walking down the stone steps surrounded by federal agents, having just signed a full cooperation agreement with the Department of Justice in exchange for immunity.
“He traded everything,” Matteo muttered, his voice raspy and thin. “Every dock... every route...”
“Dominic did what everyone else is doing, Matteo,” Arthur said bluntly, his voice lacking any remnant of fear. “He survived. You should have cut a deal two months ago when the DOJ offered terms. Now? They don't want a deal. They want you in a maximum-security cell for the rest of your life.”
Matteo slammed his fist onto the cable spool. “I’m not spending my life in a cage, Arthur!”
“Then we need to cross into Mexico tonight,” Arthur urged, leaning forward. “I have a contact in Texas who can get us across the Rio Grande for forty thousand cash. We can vanish into South America. You can start over.”
“No,” Matteo growled, his dark eyes fixed on the map. “We’re going north.”
Arthur let out an exhausted sigh. “Matteo, please. Not Canada again. We’ve spent three months chasing false leads in Montreal and Toronto! She doesn't want to be found!”
“She’s there, Arthur!” Matteo shouted, his eyes wide with a manic, unhinged conviction. “I checked the public land registry updates from the Nova Scotia maritime jurisdiction from six months ago! A private trust registered under the name Vance Holdings purchased a coastal property near Lunenburg!”
He grabbed Arthur’s jacket collar, dragging the older man closer.
“Vance Holdings, Arthur! That was her father’s old shell company! She thinks she was clever using his old naming conventions! She’s sitting on a bluff in Nova Scotia with my daughter right now!”

Arthur stared at his boss, seeing only a broken, tragic figure consumed by an obsession that would inevitably destroy them all.
“Fine,” Arthur whispered softly, pulling away from Matteo’s grip. “We go north.”
