Chapter 7 - The Storm Breaks

Three weeks passed.
The Lake Forest estate transformed into a sanctuary. Layla was provided with a team of specialized nurses, chef-prepared meals rich in nutrients, and a completely renovated nursery filled with custom wooden cribs, soft white wool rugs, and hand-painted murals of forest animals.
Dominic rarely left the estate.
He moved his primary business operations to his home study, conducting syndicate meetings via encrypted video lines and spending every evening with Layla.
He sat with her by the fire, reading to her, listening to her talk about her father’s memory, and learning every small detail about the woman he had so carelessly discarded months ago.
For the first time in his life, the ruthless mafia boss looked forward to coming upstairs at five o'clock every afternoon.
However, the war outside the estate walls was far from over.
On a freezing Tuesday morning in late February, when Layla was thirty-four weeks pregnant, the peace was shattered.
Dominic was in the basement study reviewing shipping logs with Matteo when the estate’s main security siren let out three short, sharp blasts.
PERIMETER BREACH. SECTOR 4.
Dominic grabbed his Kimber .45 from the desk, his eyes flaring with instant, lethal rage. “Matteo! Where are they?!”
“Main gate!” Matteo shouted, pulling a tactical submachine gun from a wall safe. “It’s a heavy convoy! Moretti’s men—they hit the iron gates with a snowplow! The Rossi family from New York is with them!”
“Get Layla to the safe room beneath the nursery!” Dominic ordered, his voice echoing through the stone corridors like thunder. “Now!”
Dominic took the stairs three at a time, bursting into the master suite just as Layla was standing up from the armchair near the hearth, her face pale with terror as the distant sound of automatic gunfire echoed through the heavy glass windows.
“Dominic!” she cried out, her hands clutching her heavy belly.
“I’m here!” Dominic rushed to her side, wrapping his arms around her waist, supporting her weight as he led her toward the hidden steel door concealed behind the nursery bookshelf. “Keycode is 0830—your birthday, Layla. Step inside, lock the manual wheel from the inside, and do not open it for anyone except me.”
“Dominic, please—don't go out there!” Layla sobbed, grabbing his coat lapels, her eyes wide with desperate fear. “They’ll kill you!”
Dominic leaned down, pressing a hard, fierce kiss directly against her lips, his hands cupping the back of her neck.
“They can’t kill me, Layla,” Dominic growled against her mouth, his eyes burning with absolute, terrifying confidence. “I have two sons to raise and a wife to marry. Stay inside!”

He pushed her gently into the reinforced steel room, pulled the heavy door shut, and threw the outer locking lever into place.
Then he turned around, racked the slide of his pistol, and walked out into the hallway to defend his home.
