Chapter 9 - The Bloodline Born

The stress of the siege triggered the labor earlier than expected.

Less than two hours after the perimeter was cleared and the safe room was opened, Layla’s water broke inside the master suite.

The private medical team, having remained secure in the basement bunker throughout the gunfight, moved rapidly. The nursery was converted into a state-of-the-art delivery suite within twenty minutes.

Outside, a heavy morning snow fell quietly over the lake, washing away the blood and tire tracks from the driveway.

Inside, the room was warm, soft, and filled with the intense, breathless energy of life arriving into the world.

Layla lay on the delivery bed, her face slick with sweat, her fingers locked tightly around Dominic’s hand.

Dominic had stripped off his suit jacket and shoulder holster. He sat right beside her pillow, his sleeve rolled up, allowing her to crush his knuckles as another powerful contraction tore through her body.

“Push, Layla! You’re doing wonderful!” Dr. Lin commanded from the foot of the bed. “I see the head for Baby A!”

“Dominic... I can’t!” Layla gasped, her body shaking with bone-deep fatigue, tears streaming down her flushed cheeks. “It hurts too much!”

Dominic leaned down, pressing his face against hers, his rough hand gently cradling the back of her damp head, his dark eyes fierce and unwavering.

“Look at me, Layla,” Dominic commanded softly, his voice an anchor in her storm. “Look at my eyes. You survived my coldness, you survived Pilsen, you survived a siege on this house. You are the strongest woman I have ever known.”

He kissed her trembling cheek softly.

“Bring my sons into the world, Layla. I’m right here. I’m not letting go.”

Layla let out a ragged, powerful cry, channeling every ounce of strength remaining in her body, and pushed with all her might.

At 8:14 AM, a loud, clear, piercing cry shattered the quiet of the room.

“Baby A is here! A healthy boy!” Dr. Lin announced happily.

Before Layla could catch her breath, another massive contraction gripped her abdomen.

“Hold on, Layla! Baby B is right behind him!”

Three minutes later, at 8:17 AM, a second, equally loud cry joined the first, filling the Lake Forest master suite with the sound of two new lives entering the world.

Dominic stood beside the bed, staring at the two tiny, pink, squirming infants being wrapped in warm wool blankets by the nurses.

The ruthless mafia boss—the man who had controlled Chicago’s commercial property and underground shipping ports without a single shred of mercy for ten years—stood completely frozen, tears welling unbidden in his dark eyes.

The nurse walked over, placing the first wrapped bundle into Layla’s tired arms, and handed the second directly to Dominic.

Dominic held his son awkwardly at first, his broad, scarred arms looking massive against the tiny three-pound infant.

He looked down at the tiny face.

The baby opened his eyes—striking, dark, intelligent eyes framed by dark wisps of hair—and let out a tiny, soft coo, his small hand reaching out from the blanket to wrap his tiny fingers around Dominic’s thumb.

Dominic sank down onto the chair beside Layla’s bed, leaning his head close to hers as they looked at their two sons lying together between them.

“Alexander and Leo,” Layla whispered softly, a tired, radiant smile gracing her lips.

“Alexander and Leo Gallo,” Dominic corrected gently, kissing her forehead with deep, overwhelming devotion. “The heirs to everything I own.”
