Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Jersey

A month passed in a dreamlike blur.

My mother remained at the Vermont estate, thriving in the peaceful environment, while I moved into a stunning two-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn Heights paid for by Vance Enterprises.

Every morning, Damon's armored car picked me up for work. Every day, I sat at my executive desk outside his office, managing his high-stakes corporate calendar, learning the intricacies of shipping logistics, corporate acquisitions, and international trade.

I wasn't just his secretary; I became his confidante. I sat in on high-level board meetings, offered insights into corporate financial filings, and kept his private life completely organized.

And every evening, the unspoken tension between us grew stronger, thicker, and more electric.

Then, on a stormy Friday night in late October, the past tried to drag us back under.

Damon and I were working late in his Fifth Avenue penthouse, reviewing shipping manifests for a major harbor acquisition in New Jersey. The rain was drumming heavily against the glass windows, and a warm fire crackled in the fireplace.

I stood near his desk, leaning over a map of the Newark docks, when Damon's encrypted satellite phone vibrated sharply on the table.

Damon picked it up, pressing it to his ear. "Talk to me, Marco."

A rough, panic-stricken voice came through the speaker line: "Boss! The Jersey syndicate... they just posted bail for Grant Holloway through a corrupt state judge! They sprang him from the county jail twenty minutes ago!"

Damon stood up instantly, his dark eyes turning as cold as liquid nitrogen. "Where is he now?"

"We lost his vehicle on the Turnpike heading north toward Manhattan!" Marco reported frantically. "He has four Jersey hitmen with him, Boss! They know you're at the Fifth Avenue penthouse!"

Before Damon could issue an order, the heavy front doors of the penthouse elevator exploded inward with a deafening blast!

BOOM!

Glass shattered across the foyer floor! Black smoke rolled into the living room as four masked men carrying tactical shotguns stormed through the shattered doors, led by none other than Grant Holloway!

Grant looked completely unhinged—his eyes wild, his jaw bruised, holding an automatic pistol in his hand!

"Vance!" Grant screamed through the smoke, his voice screeching with insane rage. "I told you I'd come back for what's mine!"
