Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

Six months later, the spring sun broke gloriously over Lake Michigan.

The sky was a vast, clear blue canopy, and the warm breeze carried the fresh scent of blooming lakefront tulips through the open glass walls of Penthouse 50.

In the sunlit conservatory, eight-year-old Leo sat at a low oak table, laughing merrily as he showed a completed ten-foot wooden model of a nineteenth-century clipper ship to Dr. Marcus, who had just signed the final, permanent court guardianship decree awarding sole custody of Leo to Nathan Cole.

"The boy is fully restored, Mr. Cole," Dr. Marcus had declared before leaving with a warm smile. "He is thriving, articulate, and completely secure."

Out on the wide stone terrace overlooking the sparkling blue horizon of the lake, Emily stood wearing a light lavender linen dress, her dark hair blowing gently in the spring wind.

A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Nathan rested his chin against her shoulder, his chest warm and solid against her back, his amber-gray eyes filled with a deep, unshakeable devotion as they looked out over the city together.

"The final escrow papers for your new historical archiving foundation just cleared, Emily," Nathan murmured softly against her ear. "You are officially the Director of the Miller-Carter Architectural Preservation Trust."

Emily leaned her head back against his shoulder, a deep, beautiful smile illuminating her face.

"Thank you, Nathan," she whispered, turning in his arms to look up into his striking face.

Nathan reached up, his fingers gently brushing a dark strand of hair away from her cheek, his thumb tracing the smooth curve of her jawline.

"Six months ago," Nathan said quietly, his voice rich with an absolute, unyielding love, "I saw a woman standing in the freezing rain holding a torn grocery bag. And I thought I was stopping my car to save her."

He smiled—a rare, magnificent smile that brought warmth to his granite features.

"I had no idea," Nathan added softly, "that she was coming into my life to save me."

Emily reached up, her hand closing around his, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart beneath her palm.

"I was never lost, Nathan," Emily whispered, leaning up to press her lips gently, deeply, and completely against his in a kiss that sealed their futures together forever. "I was just waiting for the right man to call my name."

And as the spring wind blew across Lake Michigan, carrying the bright, golden light of dawn over the skyline of Chicago, Emily Carter knew that she would never stand out in the cold again.
