Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Gala

The Carter family had managed to secure seats at Senator Vance’s table through a series of desperate corporate donations Jason had arranged using the last of their estate credit.
As Nathan and Emily walked smoothly toward the VIP lounge area, Jason Carter stepped directly into their path, holding his half-empty scotch glass, his face flushed red with alcohol and outrage.
"Emily?!" Jason barked, his voice loud enough to attract the attention of twenty nearby guests. "What the hell are you doing here?!"
Eleanor and Sophie rushed over, their eyes widening in absolute, stunned disbelief as they took in Emily’s designer velvet dress, her immaculate hair, and the million-dollar sapphire pendant resting against her collarbone.
"Emily?" Eleanor gasped, clutching her pearl necklace. "How... how did you get an invitation to The Drake Gala? And why are you wearing those clothes?"
Emily stopped, looking at her mother and brother with cool, detached composure.
"Good evening, Eleanor. Jason," Emily said smoothly, her voice completely devoid of the anxious, pleading tone she had used for seven years. "I am attending as Mr. Cole’s guest and representative."
Jason let out a sharp, mocking laugh, turning to look at Nathan Cole with aggressive, drunk bravado.
"Mr. Cole," Jason sneered, "I don't know what story this girl told you, but she’s an unemployed parasite. My mother kicked her out of our house four weeks ago because she was leeching off our family funds. If you’re hiring her for anything, you’re being scammed!"
The surrounding ballroom fell into a tense, icy silence.
Nathan Cole didn't raise his voice. He didn't move an inch.
He slowly turned his head, his amber-gray eyes locking onto Jason Carter with a look so dark, so cold, and so utterly lethal that Jason’s drunken smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden wave of instinctual terror.
"Jason Carter," Nathan spoke, his voice dropping into a register that made the surrounding security guards instantly shift their weight. "You are the managing director of Carter Import Logistics, correct?"
Jason swallowed hard, nodding nervously. "Yes... I am."
"Three days ago," Nathan said calmly, taking a slow step toward the younger man, "my compliance office completed a audit of the cargo bay leases at Port Chicago. It appears Carter Logistics has been operating out of Bay 14 under a lease extension that expired six months ago."
Jason’s face drained of every ounce of color. "What... what does that have to do with—"
"Bay 14 belongs to Cole Maritime Enterprises," Nathan interrupted softly. "As of eight o'clock tomorrow morning, your corporate lease is revoked, your equipment is seized for unpaid harbor fees, and your firm is blacklisted from every dock along Lake Michigan."
"What?!" Eleanor shrieked, clutching Jason’s arm. "You can't do that! That will bankrupt our family!"
"Your son spoke out of turn to my Senior Estate Manager," Nathan replied, his eyes icy and unyielding. "Consider yourselves fortunate that I am revoking a lease rather than revoking your license to do business in this city entirely."
Nathan turned his arm gently toward Emily.
"Shall we go to our private table, Emily?" Nathan asked softly, his tone instantly transforming into warmth.
May you like
"Yes, Nathan," Emily smiled, taking his arm. "Let’s go."
They walked past the pale, trembling Carter family, leaving them standing in the center of the ballroom as whispering crowds pointing fingers at their public humiliation.
