Chapter 6 - The Choice

The bedroom fell into complete silence. All eyes—Marco, the tactical operators, and Charlotte herself—were turned onto Jane.

Charlotte looked up at Jane with wild, desperate eyes, her hands clasped together in a pathetic plea for mercy. "Jane... please. I raised you. I was the only mother you ever knew! Please, don't let him kill me!"

Jane reached into her tactical coat and pulled out the silver handgun Marco had given her. She clicked the safety off with a sharp, practiced motion she had learned in the back of the car.

Charlotte gasped, pressing herself flat against the floor. "No! Please!"

Jane raised the gun, pointing the barrel straight between Charlotte’s eyes. Her hand was steady. Her breathing was slow and measured. For three long seconds, Jane felt the full, crushing weight of the power she now possessed. She could pull the trigger, end twenty-two years of suffering in a single second, and no one in this room—or in this city—would ever question it.

Slowly, Jane lowered the barrel. She clicked the safety back on and slid the weapon back into her pocket.

Charlotte let out a ragged, trembling breath of relief. "Thank you... thank you, Jane..."

"Don't thank me, Charlotte," Jane said, her voice devoid of any warmth. "Death is too easy for you. If we kill you tonight, you become a mystery. A tragic story about a wealthy socialite who vanished from her Gold Coast home."

Jane leaned down, grabbing Charlotte by the hair and pulling her face up until they were inches apart.

"You are going to live," Jane whispered fiercely. "You are going to spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security state prison for human trafficking, grand fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder. My legal team will ensure you never see the light of day. Every morning when you wake up in a six-by-eight cell, eating prison food and scrubbing concrete floors, you will remember that the girl you treated like a maid is sitting in your throne."

Jane released her hair, letting Charlotte’s head drop back onto the floor.

Marco looked at Jane, his eyes shining with profound admiration and pride. A low, dangerous chuckle escaped his lips.

"Leo," Marco ordered. "Call the State Prosecutor. Tell him we have the evidence package ready regarding Charlotte Whitmore’s offshore fraud network. Hand her over to the federal marshals at dawn."

"Understood, Boss," Leo replied, grabbing Charlotte by the arms and dragging her out of the room as she began to scream and kick in total breakdown.

Marco walked over to Jane, wrapping a warm, protective arm around her shoulders.

"Come," Marco said gently. "Let's go home. To the real home."
