Chapter 8 - The Boardroom

Three weeks later.

The high-rise headquarters of Duca Logistics & Real Estate on LaSalle Street sat under a bright, cloudless Chicago sky.

Inside the top-floor executive boardroom, twenty of the most powerful syndicate bosses, corporate executives, and legal representatives in the Midwest sat around a massive oval mahogany table.

At the head of the table sat Marco Duca.

Beside him sat Jane. She was dressed in a sleek, custom-tailored dark burgundy suit, her dark hair styled into elegant, commanding waves. Around her neck hung a simple gold chain holding her mother’s silver pocket watch.

The room was filled with low, anxious murmurs. The sudden arrest and absolute financial collapse of Charlotte Whitmore had sent shockwaves through Chicago's high society and underground markets alike. Rumors had been swirling for weeks about the mysterious young woman who had orchestrated Charlotte’s downfall alongside Marco.

Marco knocked his heavy gold signet ring against the mahogany table, commanding instant silence across the room.

"Gentlemen," Marco began, his deep voice carrying effortless authority. "For twenty-three years, this syndicate has operated under my sole direction. We rebuilt our shipping lines, expanded our commercial holdings, and eliminated those who sought to destroy us."

The board members nodded in unison, several of them offering murmurs of agreement.

"But as many of you who served under my father know," Marco continued, "the Duca empire was never meant to be ruled by one person alone. It was built on a partnership between the Duca line and the Ross line."

Marco stood up, placing his hand gently on Jane’s shoulder.

"Three weeks ago, the true heir of Clara Ross was returned to us," Marco announced, his gray eyes sweeping across the table with lethal intensity. "This is Jane Ross. She holds fifty percent of all syndicate stock, full voting rights on the executive board, and absolute authority over all commercial real estate holdings."

A heavy gasp rippled through the room.

A senior board member—an elderly man named Salvatore who had served under the old regime—stood up, his eyes wide as he stared at Jane’s face.

"My God..." Salvatore breathed, his hands trembling. "It’s Clara. It’s like looking at a ghost."

"She is no ghost, Salvatore," Marco said proudly. "She is the future of this family."

Jane stood up, leaning her hands flat against the mahogany table, looking every single boss in the eye with calm, unwavering strength.

"Some of you may think that because I grew up away from this world, I am weak," Jane said, her voice clear and resonant. "Some of you may think I can be manipulated, outmaneuvered, or ignored. Let me assure you: Charlotte Whitmore thought the exact same thing. She is currently serving a thirty-year sentence in a federal penitentiary."

The board members sat up straight, a sudden, profound respect settling over the room.

"Under my direction," Jane continued, "we are expanding our legitimate infrastructure, clean-energy shipping contracts, and urban development projects by three hundred million dollars over the next fiscal year. We will protect our territory, enrich our partners, and destroy anyone who stands in our way. Are there any objections?"

The boardroom was completely silent for two seconds.

Then, Salvatore bowed his head deeply. "No objections, Boss."

One by one, every man around the oval table bowed their heads in absolute submission to the new co-ruler of Chicago.
