Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

One year later.

The Romano estate in Lake Forest had been completely rebuilt. The ruined iron front gates had been replaced with beautiful, handcrafted wrought-iron gates adorned with silver olive branches—a symbol of peace and new beginnings.

The rose gardens were blooming in full, vibrant red and white, filled with the sweet scent of autumn flowers.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the sprawling estate lawns were filled with guests—not armed mobsters in dark suits, but doctors, nurses, charity workers, and city officials.

Today was the official opening gala for the Leo & Fiona Bennett Pediatric Trauma Center—a one-hundred-million-dollar state-of-the-art medical facility funded entirely by the newly restructured, completely legitimate Romano Foundation.

Fiona stood on the sweeping marble terrace overlooking the gardens, looking breathtaking in an elegant midnight-blue floor-length silk gown. Her hair was styled in soft, sophisticated waves, and on her left hand, the brilliant diamond ring caught the warm afternoon sun.

In her arms she held fifteen-month-old Leo, who was walking now, wearing a miniature tuxedo with a tiny red bow tie, babbling happily as he pointed at the swans swimming in the central fountain.

Alessio walked out onto the terrace, wearing a dark grey tailored suit. He looked younger, healthier, the dark, haunted circles beneath his eyes completely gone, replaced by an aura of calm, commanding authority.

He stepped behind Fiona, wrapping his arm securely around her waist, resting his chin gently on her shoulder as the two of them watched the guests mingling below.

"The board just approved the final budget for the new neonatal ICU wing," Fiona said, turning her head to smile at him. "We're going to be able to provide free pediatric trauma care to over five thousand low-income families a year."

"I know," Alessio smiled, pressing a soft kiss against her neck. "Dr. Hayes told me downstairs. He said you're a ruthless negotiator."

"I learned from the best," Fiona teased, tapping his chest playfully.

"Amara! Amara!" Leo babbled happily, reaching his small hands out toward Dominic, who was walking up the terrace steps carrying a giant stuffed teddy bear that was nearly as big as he was.

"Happy birthday, kiddo," Dominic growled with a rare, genuine grin, setting the massive bear down on the stone tiles. Leo instantly toddled over, throwing his tiny arms around the bear's furry leg.

Fiona laughed softly, leaning her head against Alessio’s broad shoulder.

"Look at them," she murmured, watching Dominic carefully helping Leo balance on the stone steps. "A year ago, I was terrified of everyone in this house."

"And now?" Alessio asked, turning her in his arms so he could look down into her beautiful hazel eyes.

"And now... I am home," Fiona whispered softly.

Alessio smiled, his dark eyes shining with endless love and devotion. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing against the small star-shaped silver pendant she wore around her neck—a gift he had given her on their wedding day, engraved with the exact date she had saved their son's life.

"At 2:04 a.m. one terrible night," Alessio said quietly, his voice filled with deep emotion, "I brought a gun into a nursery expecting to see death."

He leaned down, pressing his lips against hers in a long, sweet, passionate kiss that sealed their past, present, and future together.

"Instead," the mob boss whispered against her lips, "you gave us life."
