Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

While peace had returned to the third-floor nursery of the Romano estate, a dangerous storm was brewing in the dark, smoky backrooms of Chicago's North Side.
The arrest of Detective Marcus Vance had sent shockwaves through the corrupt network of dirty cops and rival syndicate leaders. Marcus had been a key operational asset for Mateo Moretti—the ruthless, fifty-year-old boss of the North Side Syndicate, and the very man who had ordered the hit on Alessio's car six months prior.
In a dimly lit luxury penthouse overlooking Michigan Avenue, Mateo Moretti sat at a leather bar, sipping aged bourbon while listening to his chief enforcer, a scarred man named Viktor.
"Vance was picked up by the feds at 5:00 a.m., boss," Viktor reported, setting a laptop on the bar. "The prosecutors have an airtight case. Someone handed them internal bank accounts, audio recordings, everything. Vance is singing like a canary to get a reduced sentence in federal prison."
Mateo’s jaw set into a hard line. He slammed his glass onto the marble counter, shattering the heavy crystal. "Romano."
"It had to be," Viktor nodded. "Vance was blackmailing Romano's new nanny—some disgraced nurse from Chicago General. Romano stepped in, crushed Vance, and fed him to the feds."
Mateo stood up, pacing near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. "Alessio Romano was supposed to be broken after his wife died. He was supposed to retreat into that Lake Forest mansion and rot."
"He did," Viktor said. "But this new woman... the nanny... she saved his kid's life a few weeks ago. The street word is Romano has made her his personal priority."
A slow, terrifying smile spread across Mateo Moretti's face.
"Every man has a weakness, Viktor," Mateo murmured, his dark eyes gleaming with pure malice. "For six months, I thought Romano had become untouchable because he didn't care about anything except his kid, and that kid is kept behind three layers of bulletproof glass and twenty armed guards."
He turned back to Viktor, his voice dropping into a sinister whisper.
"But a nanny?" Mateo chuckled darkly. "A nanny leaves the estate. A nanny goes to the pharmacy. A nanny has a past. If we take her, Alessio Romano will come out of his fortress... and this time, we finish what we started on the highway."

"How do you want to handle it?" Viktor asked, pulling a tactical knife from his boot and flipping it in his palm.
"Romano’s estate orders medical supplies every Tuesday from a private distributor downtown," Mateo explained, sliding a paper folder across the bar. "Intercept the delivery van on Tuesday morning. Put our men inside. When the gates open to let the shipment in... we take the girl and kill the boy."
