Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

The silence in the dining room became absolute. The only sound was the crackle of the wood fire in the hearth and the rain beating against the high windows.

Vivien stood frozen, her hands trembling slightly against her silk dress. She stared at Marin, her eyes filled with a desperate, malicious promise of retribution. She was convinced that Marin would break, that the threat to her son would force her to step in and manipulate the writing board.

Isabella took the black marker from Marin’s hand.

She did not hesitate. Her movements were swift, deliberate, and full of purpose. She wrote three large words across the white surface of the board, then turned it around so that it faced Victor Maro and the assembled capos.

VIVIEN IS A TRAITOR.

Gasps echoed through the room. Several capos shifted in their seats, their hands instinctively moving toward their coats.

Vivien’s face turned completely white. "What?! No! She’s confused! Dominic, she doesn't know what she's writing! Her mind is failing her!"

Isabella did not stop. She wiped the board with a cloth and wrote again, her hand flying across the surface with furious speed:

SHE THREATENED MARIN'S SON TO FORCE MY CONSENT. SHE WORKS FOR MARO.

The room descended into dangerous, tense stillness.

Victor Maro’s expression changed from polite curiosity to cold aggression. He slammed his glass down on the table, shattering the base. "This is absurdity! The old woman has lost her mind! Dominic, are you going to let your invalid mother insult your guests and your fiancée?"

Dominic didn't look at Maro. He kept his eyes on Vivien, who was backing away slowly toward the arched exit.

"Vivien," Dominic said, his voice shockingly calm, almost conversational. "At four-seventeen yesterday afternoon, you called my phone to tell me my mother was resting."

Vivien stopped in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat.

"You thought you hung up," Dominic continued, taking a step toward her. His cane clicked against the floor with every step. "You didn't. I heard every word you said to Marin. I heard you describe the blue backpack. I heard you mention the red inhaler."

Vivien’s eyes widened in sheer terror. The color completely drained from her skin. "Dominic... no... darling, listen to me! It was a mistake! I was just trying to secure our future! My father... my father owed money to Maro, they forced me—"

"Shut up!" Victor Maro roared, drawing a silenced pistol from his shoulder holster.

Before Maro could raise the weapon, Carlo moved with terrifying speed. A single gunshot echoed through the dining room. Maro’s hand exploded in a cloud of blood as his gun fell to the floor. He dropped to his knees, screaming in pain, clutching his shattered wrist.

Simultaneously, the heavy oak doors of the dining room burst open. Eight fully armed Virelli soldiers swept into the room, their assault rifles raised, instantly neutralizing Maro’s bodyguards before they could even draw their weapons.

Panic erupted among the remaining guests, but Dominic simply raised one hand, commanding immediate order.

"Sit down!" Dominic’s voice boomed across the hall, carrying the authority of a Don who had just reclaimed his kingdom.

The capos immediately froze, sinking back into their chairs, staring in horror at the blood pooling on the rug around Victor Maro.

Dominic walked slowly toward Vivien, who was now cowering against the mahogany sideboard, surrounded by broken crystal and overturned flowers.

"You thought you were dealing with a helpless old woman and a defenseless servant," Dominic said, stopping right in front of her. He reached out and gently slid the engagement ring off her left ring finger. "You forgot who built this family."
