Chapter 9 - The Blessing

That evening, a small, intimate dinner was held in the family dining room—not the grand, cold hall where the capos had gathered, but the warm, sunlit breakfast room overlooking the ocean.

There were only four people at the table: Isabella, Dominic, Marin, and Elias.

The meal was simple, prepared by the family chef, filled with quiet conversation and the easy, comfortable rhythm of a real family. Elias talked enthusiastically about his new school in Newport, where he was already the star of the soccer team, while Isabella listened with bright, happy eyes, tapping her hand against the table in rhythm with his voice.

After dinner, Elias ran off to the living room to watch a movie with the dog.

Isabella reached for her writing board, which now stayed permanently on a side table nearby. She wrote a message, her hand steady and clear, and pushed it across the table toward Dominic and Marin.

They both looked down at the board.

IT IS TIME FOR A NEW RING.

Marin’s cheeks burned bright crimson, and she looked down at her lap in sudden embarrassment.

Dominic, however, smiled faintly. He looked at his mother, then turned to Marin.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He set it gently on the tablecloth between them.

"I didn't buy this from a luxury boutique in Manhattan," Dominic said, his voice deep and sincere. "This belonged to my grandmother. She wore it when she came to this country with nothing but a suitcase and a belief that family was worth dying for."

He opened the box. Inside rested an antique platinum ring set with a clear, brilliant sapphire, surrounded by tiny diamonds.

"Dominic..." Marin whispered, her eyes wide with shock. "I... I'm just..."

"Don't say you're just a caregiver, Marin," Dominic interrupted softly, his dark eyes burning with deep emotion. "You are the strongest woman I have ever met. You protected my mother when I was blind. You brought life back into this house."

He took the ring from the box and looked at her with total vulnerability.

"I don't want a marriage of convenience," Dominic said. "I don't want a political alliance. I want a partner who stands beside me because she trusts me. Will you marry me, Marin?"

Marin looked at the ring, then at Isabella, who was nodding vigorously with tears of joy in her eyes. Finally, she looked at Dominic—the powerful, dangerous man who had become her sanctuary.

"Yes," she whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek as she smiled. "Yes, I will."

Dominic slid the sapphire ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.
