Chapter 3 - Shadows on the Waterfront

For the next forty-eight hours, the Bellanti estate operated under a state of quiet, tactical deception.

On Claire’s explicit instructions, Nico continued to play the part of a failing patient. When Vanessa entered his study in the mornings, he allowed his hands to tremble slightly when picking up his coffee cup. He deliberately paused before answering simple questions, pretending to struggle for names and dates. He allowed Vanessa to lead him to his wheelchair, watching her through half-closed eyelids as she smiled her gentle, patronizing smile.

Vanessa believed her plan was working flawlessly. On Wednesday afternoon, she invited Adrian Bellanti to the estate under the pretense of a "family afternoon tea."

Claire stood in the corner of the formal sunroom, wearing her blue scrubs, holding a tray with Nico’s afternoon tea service.

Adrian Bellanti was a tall, sharp-featured man in his late thirties, wearing a tailored three-piece gray suit and a gold watch that caught the sunlight. He sat on the velvet sofa opposite Nico’s wheelchair, sipping espresso while reviewing a thick stack of corporate documents.

"The board meeting is set for Friday morning at nine, Nico," Adrian said, his tone dripping with fake sympathy. "I’ve taken the liberty of drafting the temporary proxy transfer. Given your recent neurological episodes... no one on the executive committee will question your decision to step back and focus on your health."

Nico sat slumped slightly in his wheelchair, his chin resting near his chest, his dark eyes looking unfocused as he stared at the Persian rug beneath his feet.

"Friday?" Nico mumbled, his voice raspy and slurred. "I thought... I thought the shareholder meeting was next month, Adrian."

Adrian exchanged a quick, triumphant look with Vanessa, who was sitting beside him on the sofa, gently patting Adrian’s knee under the mahogany coffee table—a subtle gesture of intimacy that did not escape Claire’s sharp eyes.

"Time slips away when you're resting, cousin," Adrian said smoothly, sliding a gold pen across the glass table toward Nico. "Sign the authorization today. Let me take the weight off your shoulders."

Claire stepped forward, setting the tea tray down on the table with a soft clink.

"Mr. Bellanti needs his afternoon medication before he signs any legal documents," Claire said firmly, stepping between Adrian and Nico’s wheelchair.

Adrian’s face darkened instantly. He looked up at Claire with cold disdain. "Who let the nurse into this conversation? Vanessa, I thought you were replacing her after the inventory issue."

Vanessa offered a tight, artificial smile. "We are in the process of transitioning her out, Adrian. But Nico insists on keeping her until the end of the week."

"She’s interrupting official family business," Adrian snapped, reaching out to slide the legal document closer to Nico’s hand. "Sign it now, Nico. Get it over with."

"He will not sign anything while under medical observation," Claire said, her voice rising just enough to carry across the room. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the digital blood-pressure monitor, and wrapped the cuff around Nico’s arm. "His systolic pressure is elevated. I am exercising my medical authority to pause this meeting immediately."

Adrian stood up, towering over Claire, his presence menacing and aggressive. "Listen to me, girl. You are an employee in this house. You do not tell me when I can speak to my cousin. Step aside before I have security throw you out the front gate."

Nico’s hand suddenly shot up, grabbing Adrian’s wrist with a grip so fast, so precise, and so surprisingly powerful that Adrian actually gasped in pain.

Nico didn't look slurred anymore. His eyes were wide open, clear, sharp, and cold as ice.

"She told you to step back, Adrian," Nico said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register that sent a chill through the sunroom. "In this house, my nurse’s medical instructions supersede your impatience."

Adrian stared down at Nico’s hand on his wrist, his face turning pale before flushing red with anger. He yanked his arm back, tearing his sleeve free from Nico’s grip.

"You're losing your mind, Nico!" Adrian snarled, adjusting his jacket cuff nervously. "You're unstable! The board will see it on Friday! You won't have a choice!"

Adrian turned on his heel and stormed out of the sunroom, his heavy dress shoes clicking furiously across the marble hallway.

Vanessa stood up slowly, her eyes darting between Nico and Claire with a sudden, terrifying suspicion. The patronizing mask she had worn for weeks was slipping rapidly, revealing the cold, calculating strategist beneath.

"You played that very well, Nico," Vanessa murmured, her voice laced with venom. "A sudden burst of lucidity. But one good moment won't save you at the board meeting. The medical records I've submitted to the corporate attorneys are thorough. You are unfit."

She looked at Claire, her eyes narrowing into slits. "And as for you, Ms. Morgan... you should check your apartment in Cicero. It would be a terrible shame if something happened to your little brother while you were playing hero in someone else’s house."

Claire’s heart stopped. The blood drained completely from her face.

Before Claire could speak, Nico reached into his desk side pocket, pulled out a heavy black satellite phone, and tossed it onto the glass table with a loud thud.

"If you or Adrian put a single foot within three blocks of Noah Morgan's school," Nico said, his voice terrifyingly calm, "the federal prosecutor for the Northern District of Illinois will receive a digital flash drive containing fifteen years of Adrian’s offshore tax evasion records, along with the wire transfer logs connecting your father’s real estate firm to the laundering operations in Montreal."

Vanessa froze. Her eyes went wide with absolute shock. "You... you don't have those records."

"I’ve had them for three years, Vanessa," Nico replied quietly, leaning back in his chair. "I kept them in reserve as leverage against your father. But if you touch Claire's brother, I will burn your family's entire financial empire to the ground before the sun sets today. Try me."

Vanessa stared at Nico, her breath coming in fast, shallow hitches. She realized in that terrifying instant that the man sitting in front of her was not a broken, confused invalid.

He was the Don of the Bellanti family. And he was fully awake.

Without another word, Vanessa grabbed her leather handbag, turned, and hurried out of the room, her heels frantic against the floor.

Claire stood by the tea tray, her breathing heavy, her hands shaking slightly as the adrenaline surged through her veins. She looked at Nico.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Nico looked up at her, his eyes warm for the first time since she had met him. "Nobody threatens family, Claire. Not in my house."
