Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

Friday morning arrived under a heavy gray sky. A cold autumn rain battered the floor-to-ceiling windows of the sixty-fourth floor of the Bellanti Tower in downtown Chicago.
The executive boardroom was a masterpiece of corporate power: an oval mahogany table seating twenty people, surrounded by leather chairs, panoramic views of the foggy city skyline, and a wall of digital screens displaying real-time shipping logistics and financial tickers.
At eight-forty-five AM, sixteen members of the Bellanti executive board sat around the table. Adrian Bellanti sat at the head of the table in the primary chairman's chair, flanked by three corporate attorneys wearing dark suits. Vanessa Hale sat in the visitor's gallery near the door, wearing a sleek black dress, her arms crossed, her expression composed and confident.
"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Adrian said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "As you know, my cousin Nico’s physical and cognitive health has precipitously declined following his tragic accident. The medical affidavits provided by his personal attending physicians indicate severe neuro-degenerative decline, memory loss, and motor incapacity."
Adrian picked up a thick leather binder, holding it up for the room to see. "Under Section 4 of our corporate charter, when the managing director is deemed medically unfit by a simple majority vote of the executive committee, voting control immediately transfers to the secondary director. I move that we execute this transfer today."
A murmured wave of assent rippled through the older board members. Many of them had been cultivated by Adrian over the past six months, receiving lucrative sub-contracts and stock options in exchange for their loyalty.
"Is there any discussion before we call the vote?" Adrian asked, a broad, victorious smile spreading across his face.
The double frosted-glass doors at the back of the boardroom clicked open.
"I have a discussion point," a loud, clear, resonant voice echoed through the room.
Every head snapped toward the entrance.
Nico Bellanti entered the boardroom.
He was not in a wheelchair.
He stood six-foot-two, wearing a bespoke double-breasted charcoal suit that fit his broad shoulders perfectly. In his right hand, he held an elegant silver-headed carbon-fiber cane, which he used with precise, powerful steps. His dark hair was combed back smoothly, his face was clean-shaven, his skin was healthy and bronze, and his dark eyes burned with an absolute, terrifying command.
Walking half a step behind him was Claire Morgan, wearing a crisp black blazer over a formal white shirt, holding a leather document case. Beside her walked Thomas Keane and two federal agents in dark suits holding blue official badges.
The boardroom went dead silent. A glass of water slipped from a board member's hand, spilling across the polished wood table.
Adrian’s mouth fell open. The color drained from his face so fast he looked as if he were about to faint. "Nico...? What... how are you...?"
Vanessa stood up from her chair in the gallery, her eyes wide with sheer horror, her hands gripping the back of her seat until her knuckles turned white.
Nico walked slowly down the center aisle of the boardroom, his cane striking the carpet with a rhythmic, heavy thud... thud... thud. He stopped directly opposite Adrian at the head of the table.
"You look surprised to see me walking, Adrian," Nico said softly, his voice carrying effortlessly to every corner of the room. "Did you think the poison would have paralyzed me permanently by now?"
Gasps erupted around the table. Several board members pushed their chairs back in shock.
"Poison?!" gasped Marcus Vance, the seventy-year-old senior board member. "Nico, what are you talking about?"
Nico didn't answer Marcus directly. He nodded to Claire.
Claire stepped forward cleanly, placing four thick white folders on the center of the mahogany table, then opening her document case to pull out a large tablet connected to the room’s digital projection system.
"My name is Claire Morgan," she announced, her voice firm, professional, and entirely devoid of fear. "I am Mr. Nico Bellanti’s licensed head nurse. Over the past six weeks, a systematic attempt was made on Mr. Bellanti’s life using daily doses of synthetic Thallium-sulfate and cardiac glycosides."
With a swipe of her finger on the tablet, the massive screens on the wall flickered to life.
High-definition forensic analysis reports from the Cook County Forensic Pathology Unit appeared on the screen, detailing the chemical composition of the replaced tablets, side-by-side with security camera footage from inside the Bellanti estate.
"The video currently playing on screen," Claire explained, pointing to the wall, "was captured at two-fourteen AM on Monday morning. It shows Miss Vanessa Hale using an unauthorized master override key to enter Mr. Bellanti’s medical dispensary, removing his legitimate prescription, and replacing it with the toxic compound."
Vanessa let out a choked shriek. "That’s a fake! That video is digitally altered! She’s lying!"
"The video file is cryptographically signed and time-stamped by the secure local server," Claire stated calmly. "And the chemical analysis was verified by Dr. Rachel Dunn, chief toxicologist for the State of Illinois."
Claire swiped the screen again. A series of bank transfer records filled the displays.
"These financial records," Claire continued, "provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division, detail a series of three-hundred-thousand-dollar monthly payments originating from an offshore account controlled by Adrian Bellanti, routed directly into a private Swiss account held in Vanessa Hale’s legal name."
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Executive members stood up, shouting, gesturing wildly toward Adrian and Vanessa.
"You tried to murder the Managing Director?!" Marcus Vance roared, slamming his fist onto the table. "You brought poison into this company?!"
Adrian looked around frantically, his eyes wild, his breathing ragged. He looked at his corporate attorneys, but both men were already packing their leather briefcases, stepping away from him as if he were radioactive.
"It’s a lie!" Adrian screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Nico. "He set this up! He’s trying to frame me to keep control of the board!"
Nico took one slow step forward, resting both hands on his silver-headed cane, leaning over the table until he was inches from Adrian’s face.
"The federal agents standing by the door aren't here for a corporate hearing, Adrian," Nico said softly, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet whisper. "They are here executing an arrest warrant for attempted capital murder, corporate fraud, and high-level racketeering."
The two federal agents stepped forward, pulling steel handcuffs from their belts.
Adrian backed away, stumbling over his chair, but the agents caught him instantly, forcing his arms behind his back and slamming him down onto the mahogany table. The cold metallic click of the handcuffs echoed through the silent boardroom.
Two more uniformed Chicago police officers entered through the rear doors, walking directly up to Vanessa Hale.
Vanessa didn't scream. She didn't fight. She stood frozen as the steel cuffs clicked around her wrists, her eyes locked onto Nico with a mixture of burning hatred and total, agonizing defeat.
As she was led past Nico toward the exit, she stopped for a brief second, looking at Claire.
"You ruined everything," Vanessa hissed under her breath. "You were supposed to be just a cheap nurse from Cicero."
May you like
Claire looked Vanessa straight in the eye, her posture straight, her chin lifted high.
"I am a nurse from Cicero," Claire replied quietly. "And I protect my patients."
