Chapter 9 - The Winter Solstice

On the night of the Winter Solstice, the Turner farm hosted the first annual Veroa Regional Farmers’ Co-operative Dinner.

The main barn had been swept clean, decorated with glowing string lights, fresh evergreen wreaths, and long wooden tables laden with local food, cider, and wheels of aged cheddar. Over a hundred local farm families gathered inside the warm, wood-scented space, laughing, celebrating, and listening to traditional acoustic music played by a local fiddle band.

Arthur Turner sat in a comfortable armchair near the wood stove, wrapped in a red wool blanket, surrounded by three old farmers he had known for fifty years. He was smiling, holding a glass of apple cider, his eyes glowing with quiet pride as he watched his daughter move through the crowd.

Brooke and Michael Miller were not present, having quietly moved into their new apartment downtown three weeks earlier, but almost every other business owner in the valley was there to celebrate the rebirth of their agricultural community.

Near the center of the barn, Peter stood beside Megan, his arm wrapped securely around her waist as they raised their glasses to toast the community.

"To the land," Peter announced, his deep voice carrying over the happy murmurs of the room. "To the people who work it, and to the future we build together!"

"To the future!" the crowd cheered in unison, raising their glasses into the air.

As the music resumed and people began to dance near the back of the barn, Peter took Megan’s hand, leading her out through the side door into the quiet, snowy night.

The snow was falling softly, large white flakes drifting lazily through the still night air. The farm was quiet and serene, glowing like a fairytale under the warm yellow lights of the barn windows.

They walked together down the snowy path toward the old oak tree near the creek, their boots crunching softly in the fresh snow.

Peter stopped beside the ancient tree, turning to face her. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-wrapped wooden box carved from Wisconsin cherry wood.

Megan felt her heart leap into her throat. Her breath caught in the cold air, creating a soft white cloud between them.

"Peter..." she whispered.

Peter looked at her, his stormy blue eyes filled with absolute, unwavering devotion. He didn't drop to one knee in the deep snow, but instead stood right before her, holding her hand in his strong, warm grip.

He opened the wooden box. Inside rested a simple, stunning ring—a brilliant, ethical diamond set in a band of solid, polished yellow gold, surrounded by small carved oak leaves.

"Twenty-one years ago, I left this valley because I had nothing to offer you," Peter said softly, his voice trembling with deep emotion. "I spent my whole life trying to build something worthy of the girl who stood by this creek and told me I could be great. I don't care about the buildings, or the trucks, or the money, Megan. The only thing I’ve ever built that matters is the road that brought me back to you."

He lifted the ring from the box, holding it between his fingers.

"Megan Turner... will you spend the rest of your life with me?"

Megan looked at the ring, then raised her eyes to his face. She saw the boy who had written thirty-four letters from across the ocean, the man who had fought a board of directors to save her farm, and the partner who stood beside her ready to build a lifetime of quiet, unyielding love.

"Yes," she whispered, tears of absolute joy spilling down her cheeks and sparkling like diamonds in the snow light. "Yes, Peter. A thousand times yes."

Peter slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly, as if it had been made for her hand since the day she was born.

May you like

He pulled her into his arms, dipping his head to kiss her deeply under the falling snow.

Behind them, the warm light of the barn glowed softly against the dark Wisconsin night, casting a golden path forward into a future that no rumor, no spite, and no distance could ever tear apart again.
