Chapter 4 - The Hidden Vault

reached out through the speakers, making my breathing stop. The video frame flickered to life, showing the interior of our master bedroom. The room was dark, lit only by the pale, cold glow of a desk lamp.

Olivia sat in front of the lens.

My stomach plummeted. She looked drastically different from the bright, vibrant woman I had left eleven months ago. Her cheeks were hollow, dark purple circles bruised the skin under her eyes, and her frame was gaunt, despite the heavy bump of her pregnancy resting against her lap. Her hands were shaking violently as she adjusted the camera angle.

"Ethan," she whispered into the microphone. Her voice was thin, raspy, carrying the terrifying cadence of someone who knew her time was measured in hours. "If you are watching this... it means I failed to hold out until you got back from Tokyo. It means they took me."

A tear tracked through the heavy dust on her cheek, leaving a clean white line.

"I don't have much time," she continued, looking nervously toward the closed bedroom door behind her. "Eleanor and Ryan... they know I found out. They've been drugging my food, Ethan. Sedatives, beta-blockers... subtle things that mimic pre-eclampsia. They brought in a fake private doctor, a man named Dr. Harrison, to manage my 'care' at home so I couldn't reach the staff at Northwestern."

I clamped my jaw shut so hard my teeth ground together. A rage so hot it burned the back of my eyes filled my chest.

"They aren't just trying to take control of your estate, Ethan," Olivia said, leaning closer to the lens. Her voice sank into a desperate, hurried whisper. "It's much worse than financial theft. Ryan... Ryan gambled away sixty percent of the reserve capital in the offshore holding shell— speed-trading high-leverage derivatives through a shadow account in the Cayman Islands. He lost nearly four hundred million dollars of client money."

She pulled a stack of printed bank statements into the frame, holding them up to the camera. The paper bore the official stamps of Swiss private banks and offshore shell corporations.

"When Eleanor realized Ryan was going to be indicted by the SEC," Olivia continued, "she decided to cover it up by executing a forced liquidation of your private trust. But your trust agreement... it requires two signatures to release the capital reserve in the event of your absence: yours, or mine as your primary beneficiary."

She paused, wiping a tear from her eye with a trembling hand.

"They asked me to sign the authorization transfer three weeks ago. They offered me fifty million dollars to sign over my power of attorney and walk away, leaving you to take the fall for Ryan's fraudulent trading when you returned. When I refused... when I threatened to go directly to the FBI... Eleanor looked at me and said, 'Then you're just an obstacle to my family's survival.'"

Olivia touched her stomach, her expression softening into a look of overwhelming motherly instinct. "They are going to induce labor early, Ethan. Dr. Harrison brought surgical equipment into the basement yesterday. They are going to take our baby... and then they are going to make sure I never speak to anyone again."

She pressed her palm against the glass of the camera lens, as if trying to reach across the digital void to touch my face.

"I hid the master evidence drive inside the family crypt at Graceland Cemetery," she whispered, her voice cracking with pure emotion. "Inside the stone vault where your father is buried. The key code is the combination of our son's birth weight and time... but Ethan, you have to protect him. Don't let Eleanor touch him. She doesn't see him as a grandson. She sees him as a bargaining chip to force your compliance."

A sudden, violent bang echoed from the door behind her in the recording. Male voices raised in anger could be heard echoing down the hallway.

Olivia gasped, her eyes widening in sheer terror. She reached out, her fingers grabbing at the memory card reader attached to the camera.

"I love you, Ethan. Always," she whispered.

me.

The screen went black.

I sat in the cold silence of the study, the dark computer screen reflecting my own face back at me. My eyes were bloodshot, my features hardened into a mask of pure stone.

They didn't just let her die. They tortured her. They systematically poisoned her, kept her prisoner in her own home, stripped her of medical care, forced an early delivery in an unsterilized environment, and left her to bleed out while they prepared a cheap wooden casket to hide their crimes.

My own mother. My own brother.

I reached out and pulled the USB drive from the computer. I slid it back into my pocket, stood up, and unlocked the study door.

When I stepped back into the dining room, Eleanor and Ryan were sitting at the long table under the watchful eyes of my two security guards.

Hearing my footsteps, my mother stood up, putting on her regal persona once again. "Ethan, this insane lockup has gone on long enough. You need to let us leave. We have funeral arrangements to finalize—"

I didn't say a word. I walked straight up to Ryan.

Before he could even register the motion, I grabbed him by the throat, slamming his upper back hard against the solid oak surface of the dining table. His whiskey glass flipped over, spilling brown liquid across the polished wood.

"Ethan! Stop!" my mother screamed.

Ryan sputtered, clutching at my wrists, his eyes bulging as I choked off his oxygen supply. "Ethan... wait... please..." he gasped out.

"Four hundred million dollars, Ryan?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm, leaning down until my eyes were inches from his flushed face. "You lost four hundred million dollars in the Caymans, and you thought you could kill my wife to cover the balance?"

My mother froze. The color didn't just leave her face this time; she looked as if she had been struck by a physical wave of force.

"How... how do you..." Ryan choked out, his fingers clawing at my sleeves.

"She recorded everything," I whispered into his ear. "Every transaction. Every conversation. Every dosage of drug that bastard Harrison gave her. I have it all."

I released his throat. Ryan collapsed onto the table, coughing violently, gasping for air while clutching his neck.

I turned slowly to face my mother.

She stood frozen in the center of the room, her hands trembling uncontrollably. For the first time in my life, I saw true, unadulterated fear in Eleanor Carter's eyes.

May you like

"Ethan," she whispered, her voice cracking completely. "Listen to me... you don't understand the scale of what is happening. If that financial shortfall comes to light... Carter-Vanguard will collapse. The SEC will freeze every asset. You will be ruined along with us. Everything father built... everything you built... gone!"

"I don't give a damn about the money, Eleanor," I said, dropping the title of 'mother' forever. "You sold your soul for a ledger. And now... I am going to collect the debt."
