Chapter 6 - The Crypt at Graceland

By 6:00 PM, the rain had turned into a torrent, drumming against the roof of the Lincoln Park estate. Detective Miller's team had arrived, transforming the drawing room into a official crime scene. Yellow tape crossed the double doors, and forensic technicians in white suits moved methodically around the casket, photographing evidence and securing chemical swabs.

Eleanor and Ryan had been formally taken into custody for questioning, their wrists bound in steel cuffs as they were escorted out through the side entrance away from any potential media cameras. As Eleanor passed me in the hallway, she didn't look up. Her pride had finally broken, replaced by the dull, hollow stare of someone who realized her life as she knew it was over.

Leaving Marcus to coordinate with Miller's forensics team, I took a single SUV and drove north toward Graceland Cemetery in Uptown.

The ancient cemetery was quiet, its grand Victorian monuments and towering oak trees draped in dense fog. The headlights of my vehicle illuminated the winding stone paths as I navigated toward the Carter family crypt—a massive, granite mausoleum built by my grandfather in the late 1920s.

I stepped out into the pouring rain, holding a heavy tactical flashlight and a metal casing tool. The wind chilled me to the bone, but I barely felt it.

I approached the massive iron gates of the mausoleum. The heavy bronze padlock securing the outer gate required a combination code. I entered the digits corresponding to my son's birth weight and time, as Olivia had instructed in her final recording: 0704_0412—seven pounds, four ounces; 4:12 AM.

The lock clicked open.

I pushed the heavy iron gate inward. It groaned on rusty hinges, exposing the cold, dark interior of the stone vault. Inside, marble alcoves held the remains of three generations of Carters. My father's bronze plaque rested on the central wall.

I shone the flashlight along the base of my father's monument. Olivia had specified that the master evidence drive was hidden inside the stone vault structure itself.

I crouched down near the bottom marble panel. There, tucked deep inside a hollow decorative cavity behind the brass nameplate, was a heavy, waterproof Pelican case, locked with a digital combination pad.

I pulled the case out into the light. My hands were wet with rain and cold sweat as I dialed the same code into the case's lock.

The latches popped open with a sharp sound.

Inside lay three solid-state hard drives, a stack of original financial ledgers bearing my mother's real signature, a series of audio recording devices, and a sealed manila envelope marked: FOR ETHAN - IN CASE OF MY DEATH.

I sat down on the cold stone floor of the crypt, surrounded by the dead of my family, and opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter on Olivia's personal stationery. The ink was slightly smeared, as if she had written it while fighting back tears.

Dearest Ethan,

If you are reading this in the crypt, it means you found the card, and you survived the trap they set for you. I wish I could be there to hold you, to see your face when you hold our baby boy for the first time.

Please know that I fought with everything I had. I didn't give up. I kept our son safe inside me for as long as I could, hiding the medication they tried to give me, spitting out the pills when they weren't looking, pushing through the physical terror so he would have a chance to live.

The hard drives in this box contain the complete financial footprint of the syndicate that Ryan traded with. But more importantly, they contain evidence of something far worse. Eleanor didn't just try to cover up Ryan's losses. She sold out our company's proprietary defense logistics algorithms to a foreign competitor in exchange for wiping Ryan's debt.

She committed high treason against the firm, Ethan. She was going to frame you for it upon your return from Tokyo, using forged digital signatures planted on your primary workstation.

They are going to try to kill Dr. Harrison next to wipe away the final medical link. Don't let them close the loop. Protect our son. Give him the life we dreamed of.

I love you forever.

Yours, Olivia

I squeezed the letter against my chest, leaning my head back against the cold stone wall. The rain drummed relentlessly against the roof of the mausoleum, a somber cadence for a final goodbye.

She hadn't just been a victim surviving in a hostile house; she had been a brilliant, strategic operative fighting a war on two fronts—protecting our child with her body and protecting my life's work with her mind.

I carefully folded the letter, placed it into my coat pocket next to my heart, and grabbed the heavy Pelican case.

When I stepped out of the crypt and locked the iron gate behind me, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Marcus.

"Boss, we found Harrison," Marcus said, his voice tense. "He was trying to board a private charter flight at a small airfield in Gary, Indiana, bound for the Bahamas. We intercepted him before he could clear the tarmac. We have him secured."

"Is he talking?" I asked, stepping into the driver's seat of the SUV and turning the ignition.

"He was resistant at first," Marcus said coldness creeping into his voice. "Then we showed him the blood toxicology results from your son. He's ready to tell us everything to avoid being handed over to federal authorities."

"Good," I said, putting the vehicle into drive. "Bring him to the Schaumburg facility. I'll be there in twenty minutes."
