Chapter 8 - The Awakening

The afternoon sun streamed through the high windows of the private suite at St. Jude's Hospital, painting the room in soft, warm shades of gold.

Claire sat up in her hospital bed, supported by three plush pillows. The pale, drawn look that had haunted her face for eleven months was already beginning to fade, replaced by a healthy, natural flush in her cheeks.

Beside her bed sat Nora, carefully feeding her a small bowl of warm vegetable broth.

The door opened softly, and Daniel walked inside.

Claire looked up, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across her face—the first real smile Daniel had seen on his sister's face in over a year.

"Danny," Claire said, her voice still slightly hoarse, but clear and strong.

Daniel walked over to the bed, leaning down to pull his sister into a tight, warm embrace. He held her for a long time, closing his eyes as a quiet tear slipped down his cheek.

"How are you feeling, sweetheart?" Daniel asked, pulling back to look at her.

"My legs feel like lead," Claire admitted with a weak laugh, "but the foggy feeling in my head is gone. I can think again, Danny. I can see clearly."

She reached out, taking Nora’s hand in hers.

"Nora told me what happened at the board meeting," Claire whispered, her eyes shining with gratitude. "And what you two did to stop Arthur."

"Arthur and Vance are both in federal custody," Daniel said. "They won't ever touch this family again."

Claire looked between her brother and the quiet nurse sitting beside her bed. "I told you not to trust anyone in that house, Danny. But I was wrong about one person."

She squeezed Nora’s hand. "Nora saved me."

"I know," Daniel said softly, his eyes shifting toward Nora. "She saved both of us."

Nora smiled, looking down at their joined hands with a look of quiet, profound peace. For the first time in four years, the ghost of her brother Leo felt at rest. Justice had finally been served, not just for Claire, but for her own family as well.

"Dr. Evans says you can start physical therapy next week," Nora told Claire cheerfully. "And I've already informed your brother that I will be acting as your private physical rehab supervisor."

Daniel smiled. "I wouldn't let anyone else take the job."
