Chapter 10 - The Light in Mercer House

One year later.

Autumn had returned to Connecticut, turning the vast woods surrounding Mercer House into a brilliant sea of gold, crimson, and deep amber.

The heavy, suffocating silence that had once hung over the sprawling estate was gone, replaced by the warm, lively sounds of music, laughter, and open doors.

Inside the grand family room, a fire crackled merrily in the large stone fireplace.

Claire sat at a wooden drafting table near the window, holding a paintbrush, putting the finishing touches on a massive canvas painting of the autumn forest. Her strokes were bold, precise, and full of vibrant color.

Near the fireplace, Daniel sat on the Persian rug alongside Nora, helping a golden retriever puppy navigate a small maze of wooden blocks—the very same blocks Nora and Claire had played with on the night it all began.

The puppy knocked the tower over with its nose, letting out a soft, playful bark.

Nora laughed—a rich, joyful sound that echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

Daniel looked over at his sister, then back at Nora, a profound feeling of peace settling over his heart.

He reached out, taking Nora’s hand and lacing his fingers through hers.

"What are you thinking about?" Nora asked softly, leaning her head against his shoulder.

"I was just thinking about the warning," Daniel said quietly, looking at the warm light reflecting off the glass windows.

"Which warning?"

"The text message Claire sent me two years ago," Daniel said, smiling gently. "She told me to come home. It was the best decision I ever made."

Claire turned around from her easel, holding her paintbrush like a wand, her eyes sparkling with happiness. "I told you to listen to me, Danny! I'm always right."

All three of them laughed together, their voices filling the grand room with light, warmth, and an unbroken future stretching out as far as the eye could see.
