Chapter 4 - The Hospital Watch

The sterile smell of antiseptic, rubbing alcohol, and clean sheets replaced the stench of scalded soup.
I sat in a hard vinyl chair in Room 412 of the Emory University Hospital Trauma Center, watching the slow, steady rise and fall of my mother's chest. An IV line was taped to the back of her left hand, delivering fluids and mild pain medication, while a thick, soothing silver-sulfadiazine cream covered the red, blistering skin across her collarbone.
She was finally sleeping, her pale face looking peaceful for the first time in months.
The door to the room swung open with a soft, pneumatic hiss.
My older sister, Sarah, burst into the room, her hair disheveled, a heavy coat draped haphazardly over her arm. She had driven two hours from Athens the moment I called her from the back of the ambulance.
"Daniel!" Sarah gasped, rushing to the bedside, her eyes wide with shock as she took in the sight of Mom’s bandaged chest. "Oh my god... Mom! Is she okay?!"
"She's stable, Sarah," I whispered, standing up to hug my sister tightly. "The doctors said the burns are first-degree with some minor second-degree blistering. They're keeping her overnight for observation because of her heart condition and shock."
Sarah pulled back, her hands gripping my arms, her face contorted in disbelief and fury. "The police officer on the phone said Vanessa was arrested. Daniel... please tell me this is a mistake. Tell me Vanessa didn't actually..."
"She did," I said flatly. "And it wasn't the first time."
I spent the next twenty minutes telling Sarah everything—the withheld medications, the mysterious bruises, the salted water, the psychological terror, and finally, the video cameras I had secretly installed in the house.
As I spoke, Sarah's face transformed from shock to pure, terrifying rage. She paced the small hospital room, her hands clenched into fists so tight her nails drew blood against her palms.
"I knew it!" Sarah hissed, her voice trembling with suppressed fury. "I knew there was something wrong! Every time I called the house over the last three months, Vanessa made an excuse not to put Mom on the phone! She said Mom was sleeping, or tired, or didn't want to talk! I thought... I thought Mom was just deteriorating from the stroke!"
"She was isolating her," I said, sinking back into the vinyl chair and burying my face in my hands. "She was breaking her down so Mom would feel completely helpless. She made Mom believe that I wanted her gone... that she was a burden to me."
Sarah stopped pacing, walking over to kneel beside my chair, placing a firm, loving hand on my knee.
"Daniel, look at me," Sarah demanded softly.
I lifted my head, my eyes bloodshot and burning with grief.
"This is not your fault," Sarah said fiercely. "You loved a woman who turned out to be a sociopath. You trusted your wife. But the second you saw the truth, you stopped it. You saved Mom's life tonight."
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed in my jacket pocket.
I pulled it out. The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number with a downtown Atlanta area code.
I answered it, setting it to speaker mode so Sarah could hear.
"Daniel Vance?" a smooth, arrogant male voice spoke through the speaker.
"Who is this?" I asked coldly.
"This is Richard Croft," the voice replied. "Managing Senior Partner at Sterling & Croft, and father-in-law to you. I am currently standing outside the Fulton County Jail, where my daughter is being held in a holding cell like a common criminal."
Sarah let out a sharp, angry scoff, but I held up my hand to quiet her.
"Your daughter belongs in a cell, Richard," I said, my voice completely void of emotion. "She committed felony domestic abuse on an invalid."
"Listen to me very carefully, Daniel," Richard Croft threatened, his voice dropping into that deep, predatory register reserved for high-stakes courtroom litigation. "You are going to walk down to the precinct right now, tell Detective Hayes that this was an unfortunate domestic dispute, and decline to press charges. If you do not, I will unleash every legal resource my firm possesses. I will tie you up in civil suits, I will freeze your business accounts, and I will destroy your reputation in this city before the week is out."
A long, slow silence filled the hospital room.
I looked at my mother sleeping peacefully in the bed. I looked at the red, blistered skin peek out from under her bandages.
Then, I let out a soft, low chuckle.
"Richard," I said smoothly into the phone.
"What?" Croft snapped, caught off guard by my laughter.
"You should really ask your daughter about the hard drive Detective Hayes is currently reviewing," I said, my tone as sharp as a diamond blade. "And while you're at it, hire a very good criminal defense attorney for yourself. Because if I find out you used your firm's money or influence to help cover up her abuse over the last six months, I won't just let the state prosecute Vanessa..."
I leaned closer to the microphone.
May you like
"...I will burn your law firm to the ground."
I hung up the phone before he could reply, turning the device completely off.
