Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Collapse

Richard Croft pointed a thick, manicured finger at my chest, his face turning an unhealthy shade of crimson.

"You listen to me, you arrogant little tradesman!" Croft roared, his legal composure completely shattering under the weight of his anger. "You think because you built a few apartment buildings you can destroy my family?! Vanessa is a Croft! I have three federal judges on my speed dial! I will have these absurd attempted murder charges dismissed before the grand jury even convenes!"

I slowly walked down the porch steps until I was standing two feet from him, looking directly into his furious eyes.

"Have you seen the video footage, Richard?" I asked quietly.

Croft hesitated, his eyes twitching slightly. "I... I don't care about whatever manufactured nonsense your security company put together—"

"It's not manufactured," I interrupted, my voice dropping into an icy register. "It shows your daughter pouring boiling soup over a bedridden stroke victim. It shows her starving my mother, salt-curing her water, and replacing her cardiac medication with sugar pills to induce a fatal stroke."

Croft blinked, his jaw tightening as he tried to process the words. "That's... that's a lie. Vanessa wouldn't—"

"Vanessa did," I said flatly. "And do you know why she did it, Richard? She did it for the twelve-million-dollar trust fund. The one with the mortality clause."

Croft’s eyes darted away for a microsecond.

That tiny, involuntary reaction told me everything I needed to know.

"You knew," I whispered, a feeling of cold disgust washing over me. "You drafted that trust agreement six years ago, Richard. You knew about the mortality clause."

"I drafted a standard estate protection instrument!" Croft shouted defensively, backing up a step toward his Mercedes. "I am a corporate attorney! I protect my client's interests! I didn't tell her to do anything!"

"Maybe not directly," I said, stepping closer as he backed away. "But you fed her greed. You spent her entire life teaching her that people without money or power are disposable. You turned her into a monster, Richard. And now she's going to spend twenty years in a federal prison because of it."

"She won't serve a single day!" Croft sneered, grabbing his car door handle. "I'll spend ten million dollars fighting this! I'll ruin you!"

"You won't spend a dime," a deep voice called out from the driveway.

Arthur Pendelton walked up the driveway holding a thick yellow legal pad, accompanied by two investigators from the Georgia State Bar Association's Disciplinary Board.

Croft turned pale as he recognized the men. "Arthur? What is this?"

"This, Richard," Arthur announced with immense satisfaction, "is an official notification of a preliminary ethics investigation and a freeze order filed against your firm's escrow accounts."

Croft froze. "What?! On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds that five minutes ago," Arthur explained, holding up a printout, "the State Financial Crimes Division executed a search warrant on your firm's servers. It appears your daughter was using your firm's private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands to transfer funds she stole from Daniel's business accounts over the last eighteen months—over eight hundred thousand dollars in systematic wire fraud."

Croft gasped, his hand slipping from his car door as his knees went soft. "Wire... wire fraud?"

"And since those transfers were routed through your personal firm's server," Arthur added with a chilling smile, "you are officially named as a co-conspirator in a federal money-laundering investigation. Your license to practice law in the state of Georgia has been temporarily suspended effective immediately."

Croft stumbled back against his Mercedes, grabbing his chest, his face draining of all color. The powerful, untouchable senior partner of Sterling & Croft looked suddenly old, broken, and completely defeated.

"Have a nice day, Richard," I said quietly, turning my back on him and walking back up the steps into my house.
