Chapter 10 - The Ledger Balanced

Six months later, the early summer sun rose brightly over the Hudson River, casting golden light across the stone terrace of the Riverdale estate.
Khloe Dawson stood at the marble balustrade, wearing a sleeveless white silk dress that showed her arms—completely free of bandages, splints, or bruises. Her pale skin was warm, healthy, and radiant in the morning air.
Beside her sat a low glass table carrying a tray of fresh croissants, a silver pot of coffee, and a morning newspaper.
The front-page headline of the New York Times read: "LOGISTICS MOGUL DOMINIC VANCE APPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF PORT DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY."
A light footstep sounded behind her on the flagstones.
Dominic Vance walked out onto the terrace, wearing a navy-blue linen suit with an unbuttoned collar. He looked relaxed, younger, his pale eyes soft as he looked at her standing against the backdrop of the river.
"Joey called from Columbia ten minutes ago," Vance said, walking up to stand beside her. "He scored at the top of his mechanical engineering class on his midterm exams."
Khloe smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes. "He’s talking about applying for an internship in Munich next summer."
"He’ll get it," Vance said smoothly. "I know the director of the BMW engineering division."
Khloe turned her back to the balustrade, leaning against the cold stone, looking at the man who had pulled her out of the shadows six months ago.
"And Detective Gallagher?" she asked softly.
Vance took a slow sip of his coffee. "His trial concluded yesterday in Brooklyn. He was sentenced to twenty-two years in a federal penitentiary for corruption, extortion, and civil rights violations. He will serve his time in a high-security wing in Pennsylvania."
Khloe took a long, deep breath, letting the clean river air fill her lungs completely.
The weight that she had carried on her chest since she was twenty years old—the heavy, suffocating arithmetic of survival—was finally, completely gone. There were no more nines waiting for her in the dark. There were no more broken deadbolts or midnight knocks.
She reached out, her fingers catching Dominic Vance’s hand, resting her long, clean fingers against his palm.
"What comes next, Dominic?" she asked softly.

Vance looked down at their joined hands, then out at the grand, glittering expanse of the Hudson River stretching toward the ocean.
"Whatever we decide, Khloe," Vance said, his voice warm, deep, and steady as mountain stone. "The ledger is clean. Now we build."
