Chapter 9 - The Fall of the House of Moretti

By midnight, the Vance estate had transformed into a command bunker.
Fourteen armed men stood guard along the stone perimeter walls, while inside the library, three senior strategists worked alongside Khloe, feeding real-time financial data into a global network of servers.
Dominic Vance stood at the center of the room, wearing a clean black suit, his hand wrapped in a light linen bandage where he had cut his knuckle on the car window.
"Every asset Victor Moretti owns in the state of New York is tied to six shell accounts in Nassau," Khloe said, her fingers moving across her laptop keyboard with cold, precise speed. "If we execute the short options on his shipping stock right now, his prime broker in London will trigger a margin call by three o'clock in the morning."
Vance walked over to her desk, leaning over her shoulder to inspect the glowing screen.
"Do it," Vance ordered quietly.
Khloe pressed a single key.
Within sixty seconds, a domino effect of financial destruction rattled through the international shipping markets. Stock tickers across three continents began flashing red as Victor Moretti’s primary logistics firm lost forty percent of its equity value in less than fifteen minutes.
At two o'clock in the morning, a phone rang on Vance’s desk.
Vance picked it up, listening silently for thirty seconds before holding the receiver out toward Khloe.
"It’s Victor Moretti," Vance said softly. "He wants to talk to you."
Khloe took the phone, bringing it to her ear.
"Miss Dawson," Moretti’s voice came through the line, choked, hoarse, and shaking with pure desperation. "Please... talk to Dominic. I’ll sign the Red Hook surrender... I’ll give up the Newark yards... just stop the liquidate order. You’re destroying my family."
Khloe sat back in her leather chair, looking up at the high mahogany ceiling of the library, remembering the cold bathroom tiles, the wet towel against her shoulder, and the flat, cruel arithmetic she had lived with for three years.
"You tried to kill us on the bridge tonight, Mr. Moretti," Khloe said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute finality that echoed Vance’s own tone. "And in the accounting of this house, that carries a very high interest rate. The liquidate order stands."
She hung up the phone.
Vance looked at her for three long seconds, then let out a low, approving breath.
"You are relentless, Khloe," he murmured.
"I learned from the best," she replied quietly.

By four o'clock in the morning, news reached the estate that Victor Moretti Jr. had been arrested at John F. Kennedy Airport by federal agents while attempting to board a private jet to Colombia. His entire empire had collapsed, his assets frozen, and his political allies in the city council were already submitting their resignations to avoid prosecution.
The war for the New York docks was over.
