Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Daniel Cole

Fireballs erupted into the stormy night sky as three of the four transport helicopters blew apart on their landing pads. Shockwaves shattered the remaining windows of the surrounding warehouse buildings, sending debris raining down onto the concrete floor.
Inside the tactical trailer, the lights flickered and died, plunging Vance and Daniel into red emergency lighting.
Panic erupted among the remaining Vanguard Prime operators outside. Shouts, gunfire, and the roar of exploding fuel tanks filled the rain-drenched air.
"Establish a defensive perimeter!" Vance ordered, drawing his sidearm and stepping toward the trailer door. "Find him!"
As Vance pushed the door open, a dark figure stepped out of the burning rain, holding a heavy tactical shotgun.
Ethan Cole stood five feet away. His black shirt was soaked with blood and water, his face smeared with soot, but his eyes were completely clear, fixed entirely on his brother sitting inside the trailer.
Vance raised his weapon, but Ethan moved faster, slamming the butt of his shotgun into Vance’s jaw. The three-star general collapsed onto the metal platform, unconscious before he hit the deck.
Ethan stepped into the trailer, kicking the door shut behind him. The metallic lock clicked into place.
Daniel backed away until his shoulders hit the rear wall of the trailer, his eyes wide with absolute terror. "Ethan... please... we're brothers... we share the same blood!"
"Sarah was your sister-in-law," Ethan said, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying tone. "Lily is your niece. You sold them out to a military cartel for profit."
"I was trapped!" Daniel cried out, tears streaming down his face as he fell to his knees. "They threatened to ruin me! I didn't want Sarah to die, Ethan! I swear to God I didn't know Vance was going to cut the brake lines on her car!"
Ethan stopped three feet away from his kneeling brother. The silence inside the trailer was absolute, heavy with the weight of three years of unspoken grief and betrayal.
"You let me believe it was an accident," Ethan whispered. "You stood beside me at her funeral. You held my daughter while she cried for her mother... knowing you were the reason she was gone."
"Ethan... please..." Daniel sobbed, clutching his hands together in desperate plea. "Forgive me... please..."
Ethan slowly lowered his weapon. He reached into his vest, pulled out the hard drive containing the Blackthorn Archive, and laid it on the table beside the glowing satellite tablet.
"I won't kill you, Daniel," Ethan said softly.
Daniel blinked, a flicker of hope crossing his tear-streaked face. "You... you won't?"
"No," Ethan replied, looking down at his brother with cold detachment. "Because death is too easy for what you've done. I'm leaving you here with General Vance, the hard drive, and the military police units that are currently surrounding this facility."
Ethan tapped his tactical radio headset. "Victoria, launch the file broadcast."
Through the trailer's communication speakers, a synthetic voice announced: BLACKTHORN ARCHIVE BROADCAST INITIATED. FILE TRANSMISSION TO DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AND INTERNATIONAL MEDIA COMPLETE.

Daniel's face drained of all color. He looked at the screen as millions of classified files, financial logs, and recorded conversations began leaking across global networks in real-time.
"It's over, Daniel," Ethan said, turning toward the trailer exit. "You wanted the family empire. Now you can own its collapse."
