Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

The morning sun broke through the retreating storm clouds, casting a warm golden light over the green hills surrounding the Cole estate.
The heavy police lines, emergency vehicles, and media trucks that had crowded the front gates during the night were finally clearing away. Federal agents were removing the last of Daniel’s seized assets, while military transport vehicles carried Vance and his co-conspirators away in heavy restraints.
Ethan stood on the front porch of the estate, dressed in a clean white shirt, watching the sun reflect off the wet rose bushes lining the stone path.
Beside him stood Victoria Kane, holding a leather travel bag. Her red evening gown had been replaced with clean trousers and a dark jacket she had borrowed from the guest house.
"The Department of Justice confirmed the leaks two hours ago," Victoria said, looking out over the manicured lawn. "Vance, Daniel, and thirty senior officers in Vanguard Prime are being formally indicted under federal treason charges. Your wife's archive completely dismantled them."
"Sarah was always smarter than any of us," Ethan said softly, a quiet smile gracing his lips.
Victoria turned to look at him. "What will you do with the estate?"
"Sell it," Ethan replied without hesitation. "This house holds too many ghosts, too many secrets. Lily and I are going to build a new home somewhere far away from intelligence work and corporate logistics."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a check written for a substantial sum, handing it to her. "Your retainer, Miss Kane. For services rendered above and beyond the contract."
Victoria accepted the check, looking at the number with a nod of approval. "It was a pleasure doing business with you, Major. Though next time, I'd prefer a date that doesn't involve rusted iron foundries and collapsing helicopters."
"There won't be a next time," Ethan said firmly. "I'm retired."
Victoria smiled, extended her hand for a brief, professional handshake, and walked down the stone steps toward a waiting sedan.
As her car pulled down the long driveway and vanished past the open security gates, the front door of the manor clicked open.
Lily stepped out onto the porch, wearing a clean light-blue dress, her small hand holding her doll. She looked up at the warm morning sky, then turned her big brown eyes toward her father.
"Daddy?" she called out softly.
Ethan dropped to one knee on the polished stone porch, extending his arms wide open.
"Come here, sweetheart," he said, his voice filled with an overwhelming, unconditional warmth.
Lily didn't hesitate. She ran across the porch, her small shoes clicking lightly against the stone, and threw herself completely into his arms.
Ethan wrapped his arms around her tightly, lifting her off her feet as she buried her face against his neck, her tiny arms holding onto his shoulders with all her strength.
"You promised you'd come home," she whispered into his ear, her missing front teeth making her voice sound sweet and small.

"I promised," Ethan whispered back, kissing her hair as tears of profound relief finally trickled down his face. "And I'm never leaving you again."
Together, father and daughter stood on the sunlit porch, looking out at the open road ahead—free from the shadows of the past, ready to begin their new life.
