Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

By noon the following day, the rain had returned to Oakhaven Springs, washing away the white rose petals that had decorated our front porch. The festive banners, the wooden lawn chairs, the outdoor fairy lights—everything that had looked like a fairytale twelve hours ago now looked like the abandoned ruins of a disaster zone.
Robert was asleep in the ground-floor guest room, heavy pain medication finally dulling the throbbing in his injured shoulder. Frank had taken Katherine to his house three miles away, where two uniformed county deputies kept watch over the driveway.
I stayed in Caleb’s old childhood bedroom on the second floor.
The police had already searched the room, taking his desktop computer, his external hard drives, and his financial files. But they didn't know this house the way I knew it. They didn't know about the loose floorboard beneath the pine wardrobe where Caleb used to hide his middle school journals and broken toys.
I pulled back the heavy oak wardrobe, used a butter knife to pry up the dark wooden plank, and reached into the dust-filled cavity beneath.
My fingers brushed against a cold, rectangular metallic surface.
I pulled it out. It was an old, silver flash drive stamped with a red serial number: AIG-0941.
My hands trembled as I took the drive downstairs to the study, plugged it into my personal laptop, and opened the root directory.
The drive contained three encrypted folders labeled with dates spanning from October 2024 to July 2026.
I clicked on the earliest folder. Inside were dozens of audio recordings, scanned receipts, and typed PDF reports. I opened the first text document, titled Target Selection & Psychological Priming.
My eyes scanned the lines, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Client: Mercer, Caleb. Subject: Miller, Beatrice (Deceased - Homicide/Hit-and-Run). Designated Target: Vance, Katherine Elizabeth. Objective: Direct client focus toward Target Vance to mitigate external inquiry into Primary Asset. Payment Status: installment 4 of 12 received ($8,000).
I re-read the third line over and over until the words blurred before my eyes.
Designated Target: Vance, Katherine Elizabeth. Objective: Direct client focus toward Target Vance to mitigate external inquiry into Primary Asset.
This wasn't just a scam to steal money from a grieving boy. Someone had deliberately chosen Katherine. Someone had fed Caleb fake records to steer his obsession away from the real driver—to protect a "Primary Asset."
I clicked on an audio file dated January 14, 2025.
A voice spilled out of my laptop speakers. It was heavily distorted through an electronic voice modifier, pitched low and metallic.
"Caleb, you must remain patient," the voice said calmly. "Katherine Vance is clever. She has concealed her involvement well. You cannot simply confront her; she will deny it and the authorities will protect her. You must bring her into your domestic circle. You must secure legal authority over her family's land trust in Mercer County. Only when she is fully bound to you will she confess."
Then I heard Caleb’s voice reply, sounding young, desperate, and broken. "Are you sure it was her? The photos... the license plate..."
"The records do not lie, Caleb," the modified voice interrupted smoothly. "Our agency specializes in truth. Katherine Vance killed Beatrice Miller. And she is living her life without regret while you suffer. Do what must be done."
I slammed the laptop screen shut, burying my face in my hands as a cold shudder ran through my whole body.
Caleb hadn't fallen into madness on his own. He had been systematically groomed, manipulated, and psychologically engineered by a predatory entity over two years. They had weaponized his grief for Beatrice to turn him into an assassin against an innocent girl.
Why?
Because whoever truly killed Beatrice Miller three years ago had the power, the money, and the malice to buy a private intelligence firm to orchestrate a fake marriage to cover their tracks.
Suddenly, my cell phone buzzed violently against the mahogany desk.
It was an unknown number with a local 541 area code.
I wiped my eyes, swiped the screen, and brought the phone to my ear. "Hello?"
Silence held the line for three long seconds. Then came the sound of ragged, heavy breathing, accompanied by the distinct background noise of rain drumming against metal roof panels.
"Mom..." a voice whimpered.
"Caleb!" I cried out, grabbing the edge of the desk. "Caleb, where are you?! Please, son, listen to me! You've been lied to!"
"I... I can't come back, Mom," Caleb sobbed softly through the phone. "I went to the old cabin near the reservoir. I looked at the files again... the ones Aegis sent me last week. Mom... the lease agreement for Katherine's car... the signature... it's not her handwriting."
"Caleb, listen to me very carefully," I pleaded, tears streaming down my face. "Katherine was in Chicago! Aegis forged everything! They took sixty-four thousand dollars from you to trick you into ruining her life! They were protecting the real killer!"
A long, agonizing gasp came over the line.
"They... they used me?" Caleb whispered, his voice trembling with a sudden, horrifying clarity. "I... I terrified her, Mom. I made her cry. I made her think I was going to kill her... Oh God, Mom, what have I done?!"
"Caleb, tell me exactly where you are!" I shouted. "I'm coming to get you! We'll go to the police together!"
"The old lumber mill near the dam," Caleb stammered. "I... I saw a car parked in the trees when I pulled up. A silver sedan, Mom. The same car from the old photos..."
