Chapter 8 - The Weight of Justice

By 6:00 a.m., the rain had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, cool dawn that bathed the mountain peaks in pale pink and golden light.

Arthur Pendelton was captured two hundred yards down the riverbank, stuck in the deep mud near the spillway, shivering, exhausted, and bleeding from a broken wrist. In his pocket, officers recovered a second encrypted flash drive containing the complete financial ledgers of Aegis Information Group, including the record of wire transfers from Caleb and the land acquisition plans for the Vance estate.

Inside the County Emergency Command Post parked near the dam, Detective Vance sat with Robert, Frank, and me, drinking thick black coffee from paper cups.

Frank sat in the corner, his head in his hands, completely shattered by the revelation of his brother's monstrous corruption.

"Arthur has already requested a federal plea bargain," Vance said quietly, setting his cup down. "He knows the state's case is airtight. The concrete testing reports from the reservoir dam were recovered from his home safe an hour ago. Federal inspectors are already en route from Washington to freeze all municipal construction contracts in the county."

"And Beatrice?" I asked softly.

"The physical evidence from the Route 9 crash was preserved in the state forensic archives," Vance explained. "With Arthur’s confession and the silver sedan seized at the scene, the hit-and-run charge will be upgraded to First-Degree Premeditated Murder."

I let out a long, quiet breath, looking out the reinforced window of the command trailer toward the ambulance sitting near the main road.

Caleb was inside, stabilized by paramedics, waiting to be transported to the regional trauma center for surgery on his leg. He was under technical police custody, but Detective Vance had assured us that given the extreme psychological manipulation and blackmail executed by Aegis Information Group, the district attorney was likely to drop all major felony charges regarding the confrontation on the wedding night, provided Caleb completed court-ordered psychiatric rehabilitation.

"And Katherine?" Robert asked gently, looking at Frank.

Frank lifted his head, his eyes red-rimmed. "She's at my house with her sister. She knows everything now. Detective Vance’s team showed her the financial records and the transcript of Arthur’s confession."

"Does she... does she ever want to see us again?" I asked, my heart aching with a profound, heavy guilt.

Frank looked at me with deep sympathy. "She doesn't blame you, Eleanor. Or you, Robert. She knows you loved her like a daughter. But..."

Frank paused, swallowing hard.

May you like

"She needs time," Frank said softly. "She needs to heal from a nightmare she never asked to be part of."

I nodded slowly, tears stinging my eyes. "I understand. She deserves peace more than anyone."
