Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Stone

The room was filled with the soft, steady hum of the espresso machine, but neither of them moved for a long time.

Adrian walked over to the side counter, picked up a clean linen towel, ran it under warm water, and wrung it out with deliberate care. He walked across the room and stopped two feet away from Emma.

"May I?" he asked quietly.

Emma lifted her head, her eyes rimmed with red, her chest still heaving from the adrenaline crash. She looked at the warm cloth in his hand, then up into his dark grey eyes.

For six months, she had viewed Adrian Blackwood as an unapproachable tyrant—a man who managed millions with a flick of his pen and demanded perfection from everyone around him. But looking at him now, holding a warm towel with gentle hesitation, she saw something entirely different.

She nodded slowly.

Adrian stepped closer. His fingers were remarkably gentle as he brushed her dark hair away from her temple, pressing the warm cloth softly against the dark purple bruise below her eye.

Emma winced slightly, but the warmth felt divine against her throbbing skin.

"Why didn't you tell anyone, Emma?" Adrian asked, his voice low and steady. "You have been carrying this around for months while working twelve-hour shifts in this house."

"I was ashamed," Emma whispered, looking down at his crisp white shirt. "He was my fiancé, Mr. Blackwood. When I moved here from the coast, he followed me. He couldn't keep a job. He started gambling. When I tried to end it, he took my savings card. He told me if I went to the police, he'd tell my family I was stealing from your estate."

Adrian paused, his hand freezing over her cheek. "He threatened to frame you?"

"He said no one would believe a maid over a man with a clean record," Emma said, a fresh tear escaping her eye. "He knew how much I needed this job."

Adrian let out a long, quiet breath through his nose. He pulled the towel away, set it on the counter, and took both of her cold hands in his broad, warm palms.

"Listen to me, Emma," Adrian said, forcing her to look directly into his eyes. "You will never stand in front of a mirror and hide a mark again. You will never lock a door out of fear. You will never worry about a paycheck, a home, or a threat from that creature."

"Mr. Blackwood, he knows where I live—"

"He doesn't know where you live," Adrian corrected smoothly. "Because as of five minutes ago, you no longer live in that apartment."

Emma blinked. "What?"

"I am moving your belongings to the guest suite in the East Wing of this estate today," Adrian stated with absolute authority. "My private security team will guard the perimeter twenty-four hours a day. You will have a personal driver, full access to the medical team, and a formal legal team assigned to your case."

"I... I can't afford that," Emma stammered, overwhelmed by the sudden shift in her world. "I'm just a housemaid—"

"You are a human being under my roof," Adrian interrupted sharply, though his tone was layered with warmth. "And while you work in this house, you are under my protection. That is non-negotiable."

A heavy knock sounded at the kitchen door.

"Mr. Blackwood," a sharp female voice called through the wood. It was Eleanor Vance, the head housekeeper. "The morning conference with the European directors is scheduled in ten minutes. And the district attorney is on line one."

Adrian didn't break eye contact with Emma.

"Tell the European directors to wait," Adrian called back over his shoulder. "And tell the district attorney I will be in his office in thirty minutes with a felony complaint."

He looked back down at Emma, releasing her hands gently.

"Go to the second floor, Emma. Mrs. Vance will show you to your room. Rest. My doctor will be here in an hour to examine your cheek."

"Adrian..." Emma said softly, using his first name for the very first time.

Adrian stopped at the door, his hand resting on the lock. He looked back over his shoulder, his grey eyes softening into something extraordinarily gentle.

May you like

"Thank you," she whispered.

Adrian gave her a single, firm nod. "Don't thank me yet, Emma. We haven't even started."
