Chapter 8 - The Verdict

The central courtroom of the District Criminal Court was silent as the jury returned after two hours of deliberation.
Daniel Miller sat at the defense table, wearing a dark blue suit provided by his public defender. His face was pale, his eyes sunken, his posture slouched in resignation. He looked like a shell of the arrogant man who had slammed an iron wrench against the estate door two months ago.
Across the courtroom, sitting in the front gallery row, was Emma. Beside her sat Adrian, his long arm resting comfortably across the back of her chair, his presence a wall of absolute safety.
The judge adjusted his glasses and took the paper from the jury foreman.
"In the case of the State versus Daniel Miller," the judge read aloud, "on Count One, felony extortion, we find the defendant... guilty."
A quiet gasp ran through the gallery.
"On Count Two, aggravated domestic assault, we find the defendant... guilty."
"On Count Three, felony terroristic threats... guilty."
Daniel slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his hands as his public defender placed a sympathetic hand on his shoulder.
The judge turned his stern gaze toward the defense table.
"Daniel Miller, your actions demonstrated a calculated, repetitive pattern of violence, emotional abuse, and financial predation against a defenseless victim. You showed zero remorse until the moment your conviction became inevitable."
The judge slammed his wooden gavel down with a sharp, echoing BANG.
"I sentence you to seven years at the State Correctional Facility, with no eligibility for parole until four years have been served. Furthermore, a permanent, lifetime restraining order is issued prohibiting you from approaching within one mile of Emma Carter or any property affiliated with Blackwood Enterprises."
The bailiffs stepped forward, snapping steel handcuffs around Daniel's wrists and leading him out through the side door.
As Daniel was led away, he looked back one last time at Emma.
Emma was not looking at him.

She was looking up at Adrian, who was leaning down, whispering something softly into her ear that made her laugh—a sweet, genuine sound that filled the heavy air of the courtroom with warmth and life.
Daniel was led into the dark corridor, the heavy doors closing behind him forever.
