Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

By dawn, the sky over Lake Michigan had turned a pale, icy blue. The rain had stopped, leaving the city below shrouded in a thick layer of morning fog that clung to the bases of the skyscrapers like white cotton.
I sat at the large marble counter in the penthouse kitchen, watching Arthur prepare breakfast. He moved with the quiet efficiency of a man who had spent decades managing crises. A spread of fresh fruit, warm pastries, and eggs sat on the counter, but I had only managed to pick at a slice of toast.
The two babies were sleeping peacefully in a high-tech dual crib set up near the living room windows. Arthur had explained that the crib was equipped with biometric monitors that tracked their heart rates, temperature, and brainwave activity in real-time.
"How long can we stay here?" I asked, watching the soft blue light pulsing on the crib's monitoring panel.
"Safehouse Beta is secure for the moment," Arthur replied, pouring a glass of orange juice and setting it in front of me. "It is registered under a shell corporation with no direct legal ties to Ethan or Vanguard Dynamics. However, Victor Sterling is not a foolish man. He will soon realize that Ethan's body was not recovered from the laboratory ruins. He will begin sweeping the city."
"And my aunt?" I asked suddenly, a cold prickle of worry hitting my neck. "If Sterling knows about my mother, won't he go to my apartment?"
"Your aunt was extracted four hours ago," Arthur assured me smoothly. "She has been relocated to a secure estate in Vermont with a comfortable stipend. She was informed that you were selected for an elite boarding school scholarship out of state. She did not ask questions."
I let out a slow breath, feeling a strange mix of relief and bitter amusement. Of course she didn't ask questions. A check and an empty bedroom were probably the best news she'd had all year.
Suddenly, a loud, sharp tone chimed through the penthouse speakers, cutting off the quiet hum of the air conditioning.
Arthur's hands froze over the counter. In a second, his calm demeanor vanished, replaced by a razor-sharp intensity. He tapped his earpiece. "Report."
A static-filled voice answered through the speaker. "Arthur, we have a breach on the lower garage levels. Three unmarked vans just blew past security gates one and two. They have signal jammers active. We have less than ninety seconds before they cut power to the private elevators."
My heart slammed against my ribs. "They found us?"
"Sterling tracked the biometric signal from the twins' crib monitors," Arthur said, his voice entirely devoid of panic despite the terrifying news. "They must have bypassed our primary firewall using Vanguard's master override keys."
He reached beneath the kitchen counter and pulled out a sleek, dark metallic briefcase. He snapped it open, revealing two silver cylinders with clear glass centers containing a pale glowing fluid, along with a pair of compact encrypted data drives.
"Listen to me very carefully, Miss Miller," Arthur said, grabbing my shoulders and looking straight into my eyes. "Dr. Chen is moving your father through the sub-basement utility tunnel right now using the emergency medical transport. You, the twins, and I are taking the roof route."
"The roof?" I yelled over the sudden, deafening wail of the penthouse security alarms as red emergency lights began to flash against the walls. "We're on the sixtieth floor!"
"The sky-deck has a private automated transport drone," Arthur explained, pulling a heavy tactical jacket from a wall panel and handing it to me. "It is programmed to fly directly to our secondary rally point in Milwaukee. Put this on. Grab Clara. I will take Leo and the case."
The heavy reinforced steel doors at the penthouse entrance groaned as a loud, metallic screech echoed through the hallway. Someone was using a plasma cutter on the outer frame. Sparks began to shower into the foyer through the cracking seam.
"Move!" Arthur ordered.
May you like
I didn't waste another second. I sprinted to the crib, scooping Clara into my arms, wrapping her tightly inside my heavy tactical jacket to shield her from the wind. Arthur grabbed Leo and the metallic briefcase in one motion, pulling a sleek suppressed pistol from his belt with his free hand.
We bolted up the spiral staircase leading to the roof access hatch just as the main entrance doors of the penthouse collapsed inward with a deafening roar of torn metal and shattering glass.
