Chapter 8 - The Activation

The glass panel beneath my thumb flashed with a blinding, crimson light that pulsed three times in rapid succession. A deep, electric hum resonated from the silver briefcase, and the pale fluid inside the two glass cylinders began to glow with a brilliant, brilliant emerald hue.

A sudden stream of green data code cascaded down the monitors lining the safehouse walls, moving so fast it looked like rain falling upward.

"Biometric sequence recognized: Miller, Harper," a soft, synthesized voice announced through the room's speakers. "Master key unlocked. Global open-source broadcast initiated. Uploading Aegis Code to international medical repositories..."

"It's working," Arthur breathed, watching the progress bar on the primary terminal jump from zero to forty percent in seconds. "The data is bypassing Vanguard's private servers entirely. It's broadcasting directly to public university databases in London, Tokyo, and Geneva!"

"Sterling is going to lose his mind," Dr. Chen chuckled from the corner, a rare smile breaking across his tired face.

"He's not going to lose his mind," Ethan warned, his face turning deathly serious as he watched the perimeter security feeds on the wall displays. "He's going to send everything he has to destroy this facility before the broadcast reaches one hundred percent."

Right on cue, a red warning light began to flash on the main console.

"Warning: Perimeter breach detected at Gate Four. Multiple high-velocity air targets approaching from the south."

On the outdoor camera monitors, three heavy black assault helicopters dropped through the morning fog over Lake Michigan, their searchlights cutting through the gloom as they hovered directly above the abandoned shipyard. Dozens of dark figures began repelling down thick ropes onto the roof of our warehouse.

"Broadcast progress: sixty-eight percent," Arthur reported grimly, pulling a heavy assault rifle from a weapon rack near the door. "We need four minutes to complete the upload."

"You have two minutes before they break through the warehouse floor," Ethan said, pulling himself out of his hospital bed despite Dr. Chen's frantic protests. He leaned heavily against the stainless steel table, his face white with pain, but his hands steady as he picked up a security control pad. "Arthur, take Harper, the babies, and the briefcase to the sub-dock beneath Pier 4. The automated boat is fueled and ready."

"I am not leaving you behind again, Ethan," Arthur said firmly.

"You aren't leaving me behind, old friend," Ethan said, offering Arthur a hard, knowing look. "You are executing Protocol Zero. I am going to hold the security override from this terminal until the upload hits one hundred percent. Once it's done... I'll trigger the warehouse purge system."

"Ethan, no!" I screamed, grabbing his arm. "We just found you! You can't stay here!"

Ethan turned to me, reaching up with a trembling hand to cup my face. His thumb brushed away a tear I didn't realize I had dropped.

"Harper... eleven years ago, I let your mother go into the dark alone because I was coward who thought money could fix everything," Ethan whispered, his eyes filled with absolute, unshakeable love. "I am not letting Sterling touch my family ever again. You brought these babies out of the cold. You gave them a future. Now let me give you yours."

He pressed a small silver keycard into my palm. "The boat will take you to a safe site in Canada. Everything you need to raise Clara and Leo is in the blind trust. You are free, Harper. All of you."

Heavy explosions detonated directly above us as the ceiling of the upper warehouse began to collapse under heavy mortar fire. Dust and concrete chips rained down on the concrete floor.

"Arthur! Move them now!" Ethan commanded, turning back to the computer console and locking his fingers onto the override controls.

Arthur grabbed my shoulder, pulling me toward the rear exit door while carrying the two babies in a heavy protective travel pod. "Miss Miller! We must go now!"

I looked back one last time as the blast doors began to slide shut. Ethan Grant was standing tall against the steel table, surrounded by flashing green light, his eyes fixed on the upload progress bar as it hit eighty-five percent. He looked back at me through the narrowing gap of the steel doors, offered a small, proud smile, and whispered two words I couldn't hear over the roar of the explosions.

May you like

Thank you.

The steel doors slammed shut with a heavy, final clack, locking us out.
