Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the spring flowers were in full bloom around the garden at Maple Ridge Way.
The quiet neighborhood was peaceful, birds singing in the high oak trees, the morning sun casting warm, golden rays across the green lawn.
On the paved driveway, Emily stood without crutches, her hands resting on her hips as she took a deep, confident step forward on her fully healed legs. She walked slowly, steadily, her gait fluid and painless, supported by months of dedicated physical therapy.
Blake stood five yards away, holding out his hands with a bright, proud smile. "Look at you."
Emily laughed, taking three more steps until she collapsed into his open arms, her head tucked against his chest as he spun her gently in the warm morning light.
"I walked funny for a little while," she whispered cheekily into his neck, repeating the phrase Cameron Voss had once used to intimidate them. "How do I look now, soldier?"
Blake pulled back, looking into her radiant, beautiful face, his heart full.

A silver SUV pulled up to the curb at the end of the driveway.
Vance, Miller, and Cruz stepped out, dressed in casual clothes, carrying a large wooden crate filled with steaks and grilling supplies. They had officially left active duty three months prior, starting a private security firm in Richmond, operating just ten miles down the road.
"Hey, team leader!" Vance called out with a wide grin, resting the heavy crate on his shoulder. "Are we burning these steaks today or what?"
"Get over here, boys," Blake laughed, waving them up the driveway.
As his brothers-in-arms walked up to the house, laughing and talking with Emily, Blake looked back at the warm, secure home behind them.

The darkness of his past, the war he had fought overseas, and the nightmare that had threatened to tear his world apart were all gone—replaced by the solid, unyielding strength of a family that could never be broken.
Blake Dean took his wife’s hand, walked up the front steps, and closed the door behind them, leaving the storm behind forever.
