Chapter 7 - The Trap Snaps

Cameron stepped past Blake to the window, pulling back the blinds.

Surrounding the entrance of St. Jude’s Medical Center were not Henrico County Sheriff’s cruisers, but eight sleek, dark blue SUVs bearing the prominent gold lettering of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice’s Special Operations Division.

Dozens of federal agents in tactical gear were pouring out of the vehicles, securing the perimeter, and moving rapidly toward the main hospital entrance.

"What is this?" Cameron gasped, his arrogant demeanor dissolving into genuine panic. He grabbed his cell phone, frantically dialing a number. "Dad... Dad, answer the phone!"

"He's not going to answer, Cameron," Blake said quietly, walking over to Emily’s bedside and gently taking her cold, bruised hand in his own.

Through his earphone, Cruz’s voice came through loud and clear. "Blake, federal agents just executed a simultaneous search warrant at Voss Global Logistics headquarters and Sheriff Nathan Cole’s residence. They found the off-shore bribe ledgers, the illegal surveillance equipment, and three million in unregistered cash."

Cameron stared at his phone, which was now ringing incessantly with frantic notifications from his family’s corporate legal team.

"You think... you think you did this?" Cameron stammered, backing away toward the wall, his eyes wild. "You're just a soldier!"

"I spent twelve years protecting this country from men like you," Blake said, looking up, his gaze cold enough to freeze blood. "You thought my wife was alone because I was overseas. You didn't realize that when you threatened her, you brought down every asset I’ve built in twelve years of service."

The door to room 412 slammed open.

Six federal agents carrying submachine guns surged into the room, led by a sharp-faced female Special Agent in Charge wearing a tactical vest stamped with DOJ.

"Hands where we can see them!" the agent commanded, aiming her weapon directly at Cameron Voss. "Cameron Voss, you are under arrest for federal conspiracy, obstruction of justice, witness intimidation, and civil rights violations!"

Cameron put his hands in the air, his body trembling violently as two agents forced him down onto his knees, slamming his face against the linoleum floor before pulling his arms brutally behind his back to snap heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"My dad owns the police!" Cameron screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic weep as he was dragged off the floor. "You can't do this to me! Call my father!"

"Your father was placed in handcuffs ten minutes ago, Mr. Voss," the lead agent said coldly. "He's facing federal racketeering charges."

As the agents dragged the sobbing, hysterical billionaire's son out into the hallway, the lead agent turned to Blake. She looked at his calm demeanor, then at Vance and Miller standing guard outside the door.

"Sergeant Dean?" she asked.

May you like

"Yes, ma'am," Blake replied, remaining beside Emily.

"General Hale sent us your file three hours ago," she said, offering a curt nod of respect. "Thank you for holding the position. We’ll take it from here."
