Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Elena Vance

The cold night air hit Rachel the moment she pushed open the massive oak doors of the Anderson estate. The ocean breeze swept over the Newport cliffs, carrying the salt spray and the quiet rustle of the trees. She took a deep, shuddering breath, feeling the heavy burden she had carried for eight years finally lift from her shoulders.

She walked past the parked limousines and sports cars, her simple flat shoes clicking rhythmically against the gravel driveway. She had no money, no coat, and no place to sleep tonight, but for the first time in almost a decade, she felt alive.

"Rachel! Wait!"

A voice called out from behind her. Rachel turned to see Tommy, the young footman, running down the driveway, breathing heavily, holding a warm woolen coat and a small leather bag.

"Mrs. Ruth made me bring you this," Tommy gasped, handing her the coat. "And your things from the pantry room. Mrs. Ruth put fifty dollars from her own apron inside the bag. She said... she said you were a miracle tonight, Rachel."

Rachel felt a lump form in her throat. She wrapped the coat around herself and hugged the young man gently. "Thank Tommy. Tell Mrs. Ruth I will never forget her kindness."

"Where will you go?" Tommy asked, his eyes filled with worry. "Mr. Anderson ordered the security guards to make sure you leave the property grounds immediately."

"I don't know," Rachel admitted truthfully. "Far away from here."

While Rachel walked toward the iron gates of the estate, three miles away in a high-rise office building overlooking downtown Providence, a man sat in a dark room, staring at a bank of security monitors.

His name was Julian Vance. He was thirty-five years old, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, with silver hair at his temples and intense, calculating gray eyes. He was the founder of Vance Global Entertainment and the sole guardian of the international classical music scene. But more importantly, he was a man who had spent the last eight years searching the earth for a ghost.

His phone rang, shattering the quiet room. He picked it up instantly.

"Speak," Julian commanded.

"Mr. Vance," his head investigator's voice came through the speaker, breathless and excited. "We found her. She just revealed herself."

Julian sat up straight, his hands clenching into fists on his mahogany desk. "Where?"

"At the Anderson birthday gala in Newport. She was working as a maid under the alias Rachel Sullivan. She just played a Stradivarius violin in front of two hundred guests."

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. "Was it... was it her?"

"There is no doubt, sir," the investigator replied, playing an audio file captured by a hidden device in the ballroom. "Listen to the bowing technique. The tone. The warmth in the lower register. It's her. It's Elena Vance."

Julian closed his eyes as the staggering notes of Paganini's Caprice filled his office. A tear escaped his eye, tracing a path down his cheek. Eight years ago, Elena Vance—the greatest prodigy the world had seen in a century, his younger sister who had mysteriously vanished after their parents' tragic death—had disappeared without a trace. The music world had mourned her, believing she was dead.

"Send the cars," Julian ordered, his voice trembling with overwhelming emotion as he stood up and grabbed his coat. "Bring her to me. And find out every single detail of what happened to her in that house tonight."
