Chapter 7 - The Queen of the Gala

The Boston Fine Arts Gala was the pinnacle of high society elegance.
Inside the grand gilded ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton, two hundred of New England’s wealthiest elite sipped vintage champagne beneath floating floral arches.
Marcus Vanguard—a arrogant, fifty-year-old man with silvering hair and a sharp, hawk-like nose—stood in the center of the room, holding court with three major bank presidents.
“The Castellano port project is doomed,” Vanguard was bragging smoothly, taking a sip of his scotch. “They had a massive structural failure on site yesterday. Word is their lead designer was severely injured. The city will halt their permits by morning.”
“Is that so, Mr. Vanguard?” a clear, velvety voice echoed from the grand entrance stairs.
The entire ballroom went silent. Guests turned their heads in unison.
Standing at the top of the sweeping marble staircase was Penelope Hayes.
She was utterly, breathtakingly regal. She wore a custom-designed, off-the-shoulder gown of liquid dark gold silk that clung to every glorious curve of her voluptuous body. The fabric swept over her wide hips and fell into a dramatic, shimmering train. A pair of brilliant diamond drop earrings sparkled against her dark hair, which fell in glamorous waves over her shoulders. She looked like an empress stepping down from a throne.
And arm-in-arm beside her walked Julian Castellano.
He looked lethal and breathtaking in a black double-breasted tuxedo, his presence commanding the room with such absolute force that several executives unconsciously took a step backward.
Marcus Vanguard dropped his glass of scotch. It shattered across the hardwood floor, dark liquid splashing over his shoes.
“You...” Vanguard gasped, his face draining of all color as Penelope and Julian descended the stairs with calm, majestic grace.
Penelope walked straight up to Vanguard, her head held high, her smile radiant and entirely cold.
“I believe you were talking about my port project, Mr. Vanguard?” Penelope said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom.
“Miss... Miss Hayes,” Vanguard stammered, sweating frantically beneath his stiff collar. “I... I heard there was a tragic accident at your site yesterday—”
“There was no accident,” Julian interrupted, stepping forward, his massive frame looming over the smaller developer like a dark shadow. “There was an attempted murder by a desperate coward who realized he was about to lose everything.”
The crowd gasped. Whispers rippled through the room like wildfire.
Penelope pulled a small leather tablet from her clutch and handed it to the chief bank president standing beside Vanguard.
“That tablet contains the digital forensic report completed by the Federal Maritime Commission two hours ago,” Penelope explained smoothly, addressing the entire circle of investors. “It details Mr. Vanguard’s illegal cryptocurrency transfers, his wire fraud, and his direct authorization to sabotage the Castellano crane cable.”
The bank president scrolled through the screen, his face hardening instantly. He looked up at Vanguard with total disgust. “Marcus... your credit lines are revoked immediately. The bank is seizing your Midtown assets.”
“No! Wait! It’s a setup! She’s lying!” Vanguard shrieked, looking around frantically for support.
Before he could take two steps, three federal agents in dark suits stepped out from the foyer, flashing gold badges.
“Marcus Vanguard,” the lead agent announced loudly. “You are under arrest for corporate espionage, attempted murder, and syndicate racketeering.”
As the agents slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto Vanguard’s wrists, dragging him weeping out through the double doors of the ballroom, Penelope stood calmly beside Julian, sipping a glass of champagne a waiter had just handed her.
She looked around the room—at the wealthy elite who had once looked right through her, at the executives who were now staring at her with profound awe and respect.
Julian leaned down, his arm wrapping tightly around her waist, pulling her flush against his side in front of the entire room.

“You broke them without firing a single bullet, my queen,” Julian whispered against her ear, his dark eyes shining with intense pride.
Penelope looked up at him, her dark eyes flashing with pure joy. “I told you, Julian. I build fortresses. I don't break.”
