Chapter 5 - The Venom in Silk

The week passed like a slow-burning fuse.

Adeline adapted quickly to her new role in the library. She cataloged documents, arranged incoming mail, and maintained absolute silence while Enzo held high-stakes meetings with city councilmen, dock union leaders, and silent partners in the syndicate. She became a permanent fixture in the background—quiet, efficient, and entirely unbothered by the darkness of the business conducted around her.

Enzo observed her closely. He noticed that she never lingered over sensitive financial ledgers, never eavesdropped at doors, and handled every task with a calm precision that was almost terrifying for a woman of twenty-two.

On Thursday afternoon, the heavy double doors of the library slammed open.

Camila Ashford stepped into the room, draped in a tailored red wool coat and gold jewelry. Behind her walked two servants carrying heavy leather trunks.

"Put them in the anteroom," Camila ordered the servants dismissively before turning her sharp eyes onto Adeline, who was standing beside the hearth with a iron poker in her hand.

"You," Camila sneered, stepping into the room. Her high heels clicked loudly against the hardwood floor. "What are you doing in Enzo’s private study?"

Adeline placed the iron poker neatly back in its stand and turned to face her, placing her hands behind her back. "I am Master Marchetti’s private steward, Miss Ashford. I am maintaining the room."

Camila let out a cold, mocking laugh. "Steward? A bruised maid who couldn't even hold a wine glass properly? Enzo is truly losing his mind."

She walked over to the mahogany desk, reaching out her gloved hand to pick up a stack of leather-bound ledgers.

"Miss Ashford," Adeline said, her voice clear and calm. "Please do not touch the master's private ledgers."

Camila froze. She slowly turned her head, her cold blue eyes burning with sudden fury. "What did you just say to me?"

"The master left explicit instructions," Adeline continued without a single flicker of hesitation. "No one is to inspect the paperwork on this desk without his presence."

Camila dropped her handbag onto the desk and stepped directly up to Adeline, her face inches away. "You think because he threw his coat over your pathetic shoulders last week that you are protected here? You are a servant, girl. A disposable piece of trash. In two weeks, I will be the mistress of this house. And the very first thing I will do is throw you out onto the street without a coat, without a recommendation, and without a dime."

Adeline did not flinch. She looked straight into Camila’s eyes. "Then I suggest you wait until those two weeks have passed, Miss Ashford. Until then, step away from the desk."

Camila raised her hand, her fingers curling into a claw as if she intended to slap Adeline across the face.

"Touch her," a voice boomed from the doorway, "and you won't live to see those two weeks."

Camila gasped, pulling her hand back instantly.

Enzo stood in the doorway. He wore a dark winter coat covered in faint specks of snow, his gloves in his hand. His face was darker than the storm raging outside the windows.

He walked into the room, ignoring Camila completely as he stepped between her and Adeline. He looked down at Adeline, checking her face for any signs of harm.

"Are you all right?" Enzo asked softly.

"I am fine, sir," Adeline replied politely.

Enzo turned his cold gaze onto Camila. "Your quarters are in the west wing. You have no business in this study. Get out."

"Enzo!" Camila shrieked, her voice cracking with desperation and anger. "You are embarrassing me in front of the servants! You defend this pathetic maid over your own bride?!"

"She obeys my rules," Enzo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "You do not. Leave this room now, Camila, before I have Ambrose pack your trunks and ship them back to your father."

Camila stared at him in disbelief, her chest heaving. She grabbed her handbag from the desk, glared at Adeline with pure, unadulterated venom, and stormed out of the room, slamming the heavy doors behind her.

The library fell silent once more.

Enzo took a slow breath, shedding his snowy coat and laying it over the chair. He looked at Adeline, a subtle curve appearing at the edge of his lips.

"You didn't back down," Enzo noted softly.

"I had my orders, sir," Adeline said.

May you like

Enzo walked up to her, reaching out his hand. For a moment, Adeline thought he was going to touch her cheek, but instead, his fingers gently brushed against the silver pin holding her maid's collar together, straightening it.

"You have courage, Adeline," Enzo said, his dark eyes searching hers. "In a house full of cowards, that makes you very dangerous to people like Camila."
