Chapter 7 - The Dinner of Wolves

The grand dining room of the Marchetti estate was ablaze with light from three massive crystal chandeliers. Long mahogany tables were covered in white linen, fine china, and silver cutlery.

Sitting at the head of the table was Enzo Marchetti. To his right sat Hector Ashford—a broad, silver-haired man with cold, calculating eyes and a thick mustache. Next to him sat Camila, dressed in a sweeping emerald silk gown that sparkled under the lights.

Sitting scattered around the table were six senior lieutenants of the Marchetti syndicate, their faces grim as they cut into their steaks.

Adeline stood quietly near the sideboard, holding a silver water pitcher, her face perfectly composed despite the storm raging in her chest.

"Enzo," Hector Ashford said, setting his glass of vintage wine down with a heavy thud. "The wedding is in six days. The legal team in New York has prepared the final merger documents for the northern transit lines. We should sign them tonight to clear the paperwork before the ceremony."

Enzo cut a piece of meat on his plate with deliberate slowness. "There is no rush, Hector. The wedding is next week."

"Business does not wait for weddings, my boy," Hector smiled, though his eyes remained sharp as flint. "The docks require investment. My ships are ready to move cargo as soon as the deeds are transferred to the joint account."

Camila leaned over, placing her manicured hand over Enzo’s forearm. "Darling, father is right. Signing tonight will allow us to focus entirely on our celebration."

Enzo looked down at Camila’s hand on his arm, then glanced up, his eyes meeting Adeline’s across the room.

Adeline gave a subtle, almost imperceptible shake of her head.

Enzo’s dark eyes narrowed slightly. He turned back to Hector. "I will review the documents in my study after dinner."

Hector’s smile tightened. "The terms were agreed upon by your father ten years ago, Enzo. Are you questioning your father's judgment?"

"I am questioning everything my father left behind," Enzo said quietly, his voice slicing through the dinner chatter. "Including the debts that were never settled."

Hector’s hand twitched slightly on his napkin. "What debts?"

Before Enzo could answer, the double doors of the dining room swung open.

Ambrose stepped into the room, holding a silver tray. "Master Marchetti. An urgent delivery has arrived from the harbor office."

Enzo stood up, taking the sealed envelope from the tray. He broke the wax seal, scanning the contents rapidly. His face grew darker with every line he read.

"Is there a problem, Enzo?" Hector asked, leaning forward.

"A shipment of arms bound for New York was seized at Port Three an hour ago," Enzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "The manifest bears the Ashford crest."

Hector stood up abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "That is an absurdity! Someone forged my mark!"

"No one forges your mark in my city, Hector," Enzo said, stepping away from the table. He turned to Adeline. "Adeline. Bring the historical ledger from the locked box in my study. Now."

Camila gasped, standing up beside her father. "What ledger?! Enzo, you can't listen to a servant!"

"Go, Adeline," Enzo commanded softly.

Adeline bowed her head. "Yes, Master Marchetti."
