Chapter 7 - The Terminal Confrontation

Ten minutes later, the main terminal of LAX was bustling with evening travel traffic.

At the exit of Gate 71A, Ethan Whitmore stood near the glass railing, holding a bouquet of white roses. Beside him stood his fiancée, a bright, warm-hearted woman named Chloe, who was holding two iced coffees and looking anxiously at the arrival monitor.

"She's not answering her texts," Ethan said, tapping his foot nervously on the carpet. "The flight landed twenty minutes ago. Why hasn't anyone come out?"

"Maybe baggage claim was backed up, sweetie," Chloe suggested gently, putting a comforting hand on his arm. "You know how your mother gets when her bags take too long."

"Yeah," Ethan sighed, rubbing his forehead. "I just... I really wanted today to go smoothly, Chloe. She’s been so distant since the divorce. I was hoping this trip would fix things."

"It will," Chloe smiled. "Just breathe."

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the arrival corridor swung open.

Two armed LAPD officers stepped out first, creating a lane through the crowd of waiting families. Behind them came Agent Miller, leading a handcuffed, weeping Karen Whitmore through the terminal.

Ethan’s mouth dropped open. The bouquet of white roses slipped from his fingers, hitting the carpeted floor.

"Mom?!" Ethan shouted, pushing past a family with a stroller. "Mom! What is happening?!"

Karen looked up, her makeup ruined by tears, her cream-colored trench coat wrinkled and disheveled. "Ethan! Oh God, Ethan! Help me! Call Mr. Henderson! Call the lawyer! These people are crazy!"

"Ma'am, keep walking," the LAPD officer commanded softly, guiding her toward the private security elevator leading to the tarmac loading zone.

"Agent! Wait!" Ethan yelled, sprinting up to Agent Miller, his face pale with terror. "I'm her son! What are you doing to my mother?! Why is she in handcuffs?!"

Agent Miller stopped, looking at Ethan with a measured, professional expression. "Are you Ethan Whitmore?"

"Yes! Yes! What happened on that plane?!"

Agent Miller gestured behind her, where two paramedics were pushing a transport chair through the doors. Sitting in the chair was Catherine Reyes, her pale face resting against a pillow, a clean, heavy bandage wrapped around her arm. Standing beside her was Inspector Arthur Vance, carrying Catherine's tote bag and portable medication pump.

"Your mother was arrested for committing a federal assault at thirty-five thousand feet," Agent Miller explained plainly. "She physically attacked a cancer patient undergoing active medical treatment and severed her IV line because she didn't want to sit beside her."

Ethan froze. He looked at Agent Miller, then looked back at his mother, who was cowering between the two police officers.

"Mom..." Ethan whispered, his voice trembling with sheer horror. "Tell me that's not true."

Karen sobbed, shaking her head frantically. "Ethan, she was disgusting! She had chemicals! She touched me! I was just trying to get her away from me! You know how my allergies are!"

Chloe stepped up beside Ethan, her eyes wide as she looked at Catherine in the transport chair, then at Karen in handcuffs.

"Oh my God..." Chloe breathed, her hand covering her mouth in absolute disgust. "Karen... how could you?"

"Chloe, tell him!" Karen begged, reaching her cuffed hands toward her son's fiancée. "Tell them to let me go! The dinner is in two hours!"

Ethan looked at his mother—really looked at her. In that moment, the veil of filial loyalty that had blinded him for years completely shattered. He saw her not as a misunderstood, lonely mother, but as a deeply selfish, cruel woman who had spent her entire life tearing down everyone around her to protect her own petty comfort.

"There isn't going to be a dinner, Mom," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a flat, broken whisper.

"Ethan!" Karen shrieked as the officers began guiding her toward the elevator. "Ethan, don't leave me! Ethan!"

"Don't call me," Ethan said, turning his back on her as the elevator doors opened. "Call your lawyer."

The elevator doors closed, cutting off Karen's screaming cries, leaving an absolute, ringing silence in the terminal hallway.
