Chapter 8 - The Reunion

While the officers took Karen down to the federal transport vehicle, Arthur guided the paramedics toward the main terminal exit where a private medical transport van was waiting to take Catherine to UCLA Medical Center for a full evaluation.
Before they reached the doors, a young woman with long dark hair and a yellow backpack came sprinting across the polished floor of the airport terminal.
"Mom!"
Catherine lifted her head, her face instantly illuminating with pure, unadulterated joy. "Maya!"
Maya Reyes dropped her backpack on the floor and threw herself onto her knees beside the transport chair, wrapping her arms around her mother's neck with a fierce, trembling tightness.
"Mom... Oh God, Mom," Maya cried, burying her face in Catherine's shoulder. "I saw on the flight tracker that the plane requested a priority landing. I thought... I thought something happened to your heart! I thought the cancer—"
"I'm okay, baby," Catherine sobbed, her uninjured arm wrapping tightly around her daughter's back, pressing her close. "I'm okay. I'm right here."
Maya pulled back slightly, her eyes catching the heavy white bandage wrapped around Catherine's forearm and the bloody stain on her cardigan sleeve. Her face filled with terror. "Mom... what happened to your arm? Why is your line gone?"
"There was an incident on the flight, sweetie," Catherine explained gently, wiping a tear from Maya's cheek. "A passenger... had a reaction to my equipment. But this gentleman saved me."
Catherine looked up at Arthur, who was standing quietly two feet away, holding Catherine's plastic folder and tote bag.
Maya looked up at the silver-haired man in the dark gray jacket. She wiped her eyes and stood up, reaching out her hand. "Thank you, sir. Thank you so much for helping my mom."
Arthur took the young woman's hand, offering a warm, respectful nod. "Your mother is one of the strongest women I have ever met, Maya. She endured something terrible today with extraordinary grace."
"Who are you?" Maya asked softly.
"My name is Arthur Vance," he replied. "I'm an inspector with the Department of Transportation. I'm going to make sure your mother receives the finest medical care in Los Angeles tonight, and I'm going to make sure the person who hurt her never steps foot on an airplane again."
Ethan Whitmore walked over to the small group, his head hanging low, his face red with shame. Chloe walked closely behind him, holding his hand tightly.
Ethan stopped three feet away from Catherine's chair.
"Ms. Reyes?" Ethan asked, his voice shaking.
Catherine looked up at the young man. She recognized the pain in his eyes—it was the same pain she saw in the eyes of her high school students when they realized they had disappointed someone they loved.
"Yes, son?" Catherine asked softly.
"I... I am Karen Whitmore's son," Ethan stammered, tears streaming down his face. "I... I don't even know what to say. There are no words in the human language that can apologize for what my mother did to you today. I am so, so sorry."
Catherine looked at Ethan, then at Chloe, who was weeping silently beside him.
"You don't need to apologize for her actions, Ethan," Catherine said gently, her voice full of maternal warmth. "You are not your mother's keeper. You are your own man."
Ethan choked back a sob, bowing his head deeply. "If there are any medical bills... any legal expenses... anything at all that isn't covered, please... let me pay for it. Please let me do something to make this right."
"The federal government and Skybridge Air will be covering every penny of Ms. Reyes's medical and legal expenses," Arthur stated firmly, stepping forward. "But your willingness to stand on the side of justice does you credit, young man."
Ethan looked at Catherine one last time. "I hope you get better, Ms. Reyes. Truly."

"Thank you, Ethan," Catherine said softly. "Go enjoy your engagement. Don't let darkness ruin your light."
Ethan nodded slowly, turning to walk away into the terminal with Chloe, leaving behind the heavy shadow of his mother's legacy.
