Chapter 2 - The Red Seal

The silence in the St. Regis ballroom was so absolute you could hear the soft hum of the air conditioning system above the crystal chandeliers.
Victoria pushed her way past two bewildered groomsmen, her face contorted with outrage. "This is absurd! Do you have any idea who we are? My husband is Harrison Sterling! He is on the board of three regional banks! You can't just march into a private event with guns and interrupt my son's wedding!"
Christopher didn't even turn his head toward her. He gestured to the Federal Marshal standing at his right shoulder.
"Lead Agent Miller, serve the master warrant," Christopher commanded.
Agent Miller stepped forward, pulled a thick manila folder bound with a red government seal from his leather briefcase, and slapped it hard against Julian’s chest. Julian caught it out of reflex, his fingers shaking so violently that the papers nearly slipped to the floor.
"Read page four, Mr. Sterling," Christopher said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Paragraph three details the three hundred and forty corporate shell accounts registered under Sterling Logistics in the Cayman Islands. Paragraph seven outlines the wire transfers your family made over the last eighteen months to avoid federal asset forfeiture."
Julian’s eyes scanned the document, his face draining of whatever color remained. "This... this is impossible. How did you get access to these ledgers? These files are encrypted on private servers in Liechtenstein!"
"They were encrypted," Christopher replied. "Until twenty minutes ago. My division has been building an indictment against your father’s firm for nine months. We were waiting for the final authorization from the Deputy Attorney General to seize the physical assets. When my sister called me three minutes ago and told me what transpired in this room, the authorization was signed."
Victoria gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as she whirled around to look at me. "Sister? What... what is he talking about, Natalie?"
I stepped out from behind the altar, stepping over the pearl veil that still lay on the floor. I walked directly over to where my elderly parents were standing near the service doors. Two federal agents had already pulled comfortable leather armchairs from the VIP lounge, setting them down in the center of the aisle and gently guiding my mother and father into them.
"Mom, Dad, are you okay?" I asked, kneeling beside my father.
My father touched my cheek, his fingers dry and warm, his eyes filled with quiet, fierce pride. "We're fine, sweetheart. Your brother told us to wait by the back doors so we wouldn't be in the way when the team moved in."
Julian stared at me, his mouth open, his mind struggling to connect the dots of a reality he had completely miscalculated.
"Natalie... your brother works for the Federal Government?" Julian stuttered, taking a step toward me. "You told me your family owned a small freight forwarding business in Ohio!"
"My father founded Vance Global Logistics forty years ago, Julian," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "He retired five years ago after selling the international shipping division to the federal government for emergency defense transport. My brother runs the regulatory branch that oversees corporate compliance for every logistics firm in the Eastern Seaboard. Including yours."
Victoria’s emerald-clad shoulders slumped. "Natalie... darling... there must be some sort of terrible misunderstanding. We were just nervous! It’s a high-stress day! Julian didn't mean to strike you—he was just overwhelmed by the wedding preparations!"
"Don't call me darling, Victoria," I snapped, my voice ringing clear through the ballroom. "And don't lie to cover up his violence. He struck me because he believed I was weak, powerless, and without resources. You laughed because you thought my parents were beneath you."
Julian dropped the manila folder, the papers scattering across the marble floor. He fell to his knees in front of me, reaching out to touch the hem of my gown.
"Natalie, please! Listen to me! We can fix this! We don't have to cancel the ceremony! I love you! I was just stressed about the business—my father was putting pressure on me—"
"Touch my dress again," Christopher interrupted, stepping between Julian and me, his heavy leather boot coming down directly on Julian’s discarded boutonnière, crushing the white orchid into pulp, "and I will have Agent Miller add obstruction of federal justice and assault on an officer's family to your booking sheet right now."
Julian pulled his hands back as if he had been burned, looking up at Christopher with naked terror.
"Agent Miller," Christopher ordered, pointing to the perimeter of the room. "Seize all mobile devices, tablets, and personal laptops from every member of the Sterling family present in this room. Lock down the parking garage. No vehicle registered to Sterling Holdings leaves the premises."
"Wait!" Vance, the best man, yelled, pulling out his phone. "I’m not a Sterling! I’m just a guest! You can't take my property!"
Two tactical officers stepped up behind Vance, catching his arms and pinning them behind his back with swift, mechanical precision. They pulled his phone from his hand and slipped it into a Faraday signal-blocking bag.

"Mr. Vance," Christopher said, looking at the best man with cold disdain. "You are listed as a secondary signatory on three of Julian’s offshore shell accounts. You aren't just a guest. You're a co-conspirator. Officers, place him in restraints."
The sharp click-click of steel handcuffs echoed through the ballroom, shattering whatever illusion of high-society immunity the Sterling family had maintained for decades.
