Chapter 4 - The Audit of Shadows

The penthouse suite at the Four Seasons was quiet, bathed in the soft ambient light of the Manhattan skyline.
Outside, the city hummed with its usual evening rush, oblivious to the fact that one of its most prominent logistics dynasties had just been stripped to the bone in a matter of hours.
My father was resting comfortably on the king-sized bed, his back supported by orthopedic pillows, while my mother sat by the window sipping chamomile tea. Christopher sat at the glass dining table, surrounded by three junior forensic accountants from his division, their laptops glowing with complex flowcharts of capital streams and corporate shell networks.
I sat across from my brother, wearing a comfortable pair of gray sweatpants and an oversized hoodie, holding an ice pack against my swollen left cheek. The split on my lower lip had been cleaned and treated by the medical team, but the faint purple shadow of Julian’s palm was beginning to bloom along my jawline.
Christopher looked up from his monitor, his eyes fixing on the bruise. His jaw tightened so hard I heard his teeth click.
"The medical report is finalized," Christopher said, his voice dropping into a low, murderous register. "Dr. Aris documented the trauma to your cheek, the laceration on your lip, and the contusion on your neck. I’ve added those photos to Julian’s criminal docket under felony domestic battery during the commission of a federal offense."
"Will he get bail?" I asked softly.
Christopher let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Bail? Natalie, we uncovered four hidden passports in his safe deposit box at Chase Bank an hour ago—one from St. Kitts, two from Panama, and one fake passport under the name Julian Vance."
My head snapped up. "Vance? He tried to create an identity using our family name?"
"He didn't just try," Christopher revealed, turning the laptop screen toward me to reveal a scanned document. "Eight months ago, Julian registered a secondary logistics firm called Vance Global International in Delaware. He was using our father’s old corporate reputation and your personal background to apply for federal defense transport contracts worth sixty million dollars."
I leaned back in my chair, a wave of nausea washing over me.
Everything had been a calculated lie. His romantic pursuit of me at the accounting firm two years ago, his sudden interest in my father’s retired career, his eagerness to manage my modest inheritance—it wasn't just arrogance or spite. He had targeted me because he believed I was an easy mark, a quiet girl from an unassuming family whose legacy he could hijack to save his family’s failing empire from bankruptcy.
"He didn't love me at all," I whispered into the quiet room.
My mother set her teacup down and walked over, wrapping her arms around my shoulders and pulling my head against her chest. "He didn't know you, sweetheart. Men like Julian only love what they can steal and display. You were a trophy he thought he could break."
"He thought wrong," Christopher said, tapping a key on his keyboard. "The grand jury convened forty minutes ago in a emergency session. Based on the evidence we seized at the venue and the holding company’s headquarters, they’ve already returned a twenty-four-count indictment against Harrison, Victoria, and Julian."
"What about Victoria?" I asked. "She claimed she didn't know anything about the corporate accounts."
"Victoria was the primary administrator for three offshore trusts in Nassau," Christopher scoffed. "She personally authorized the transfer of two hundred thousand dollars from an illegal pension fund skimming scheme last week to buy her emerald dress and pay for the floral arrangements at the St. Regis. She’s being booked at the federal detention center in Brooklyn right now."
A soft knock came at the suite door.
Agent Miller stepped inside, carrying a thick black binder. "Deputy Director Vance, we’ve finished clearing the venue. The St. Regis management has surrendered all security camera footage from the ballroom, the foyer, and the VIP lounge."
"Did you get the altar footage?" Christopher asked.
"Crystal clear audio and video," Miller replied, pulling a tablet from the binder and setting it on the table. "High-definition 4K camera mounted directly behind the floral arch. It caught the entire interaction—including the slap, the mother's comments about your parents, and Julian's threats."
Christopher pushed play.
On the screen, the grand ballroom looked bright and beautiful. Then came Victoria’s mocking voice: "Look at them. They look poor, exhausted, and frankly out of place among high-society clientele..."
Then came Julian’s voice, sharp and venomous, followed by the terrifying, violent crack of his hand striking my face. The camera caught the exact moment my veil flew loose, the trickle of blood on my lip, and the cruel, mocking laughter of the groomsmen.
Christopher closed his eyes for three seconds, taking a slow, deep breath to control the fury surging through his veins.
"Agent Miller," Christopher said quietly.
"Sir?"
"Leaked the video to the press."

I looked up at my brother in surprise. "Christopher... the entire video?"
"Every single second of it," Christopher said, looking me dead in the eye. "By midnight tonight, every news outlet from New York to London will show the world exactly who Julian Sterling and his family really are. They wanted high society to applaud them. Let’s see how society feels when they see them in 4K."
