Chapter 6 - The Bail Hearing

The Hennepin County Criminal Courthouse was packed to capacity by 2:00 PM.

Sensational headlines had already broken across the national news networks: LOGISTICS TYCOON'S MOTHER AND SISTER ARRESTED IN BRUTAL HEIST ON PREGNANT DAUGHTER-IN-LAW.

Corrine and Sloan were led into the courtroom through the secure side entrance.

Stripped of their designer clothes, blowout hair, and diamond jewelry, they wore standard orange county jumpsuits. Sloan was sobbing continuously, her face blotchy and pale. Corrine still tried to hold her head high, casting desperate, furious glares toward the spectator gallery where I sat beside Vance.

Judge Beatrice Vance—a legendary, no-nonsense judge known for her zero-tolerance policy on domestic violence—sat behind the high mahogany bench.

"State versus Corrine Sterling and Sloan Sterling," Judge Vance announced, her voice booming through the silent courtroom. "The State is requesting remand without bail."

Gable stood up immediately. "Your Honor! My clients are lifelong residents with zero prior criminal records. Mrs. Sterling is a prominent philanthropist. Sloan is a recent college graduate. They pose zero flight risk! We request a reasonable bail of fifty thousand dollars each."

The prosecutor, a sharp-eyed woman named District Attorney Hayes, stood up and tapped a flash drive against her desk.

"Your Honor," DA Hayes said loudly, "the State presents Exhibit A: A four-minute, unedited 4K recording taken by the victim's husband during the commission of the crime. Furthermore, financial records seized this morning show that twenty-four hours prior to the break-in, Sloan Sterling booked two one-way tickets to Zurich, Switzerland."

The entire gallery gasped.

I turned my head slightly. Sloan squeezed her eyes shut, weeping hysterically, while Corrine looked down at the defense table in shock. They hadn't just planned to rob my safe—they were planning to liquidate the stolen deeds and flee the country, leaving Alora battered in an empty house.

"They intended to commit grand theft and flee the jurisdiction," DA Hayes continued firmly. "The victim, Alora Sterling, remains hospitalized with severe physical and psychological injuries. These defendants represent an extreme danger to the victim and the community."

Judge Vance looked over her reading glasses, her gaze landing on Corrine like a hundred-pound weight.

"In my thirty years on the bench," Judge Vance stated, her tone dropping into absolute disgust, "I have rarely witnessed such a cold, calculated display of familial betrayal and unadulterated greed. To attack a pregnant mother in her own home while her husband is away is an act of sheer savagery."

Judge Vance slammed her heavy wooden gavel onto the desk.

CRACK!

"Bail is DENIED for both defendants," Judge Vance ruled. "Corrine Sterling and Sloan Sterling will remain in county custody pending trial."

"NO! MOM! NO!" Sloan screamed, collapsing to the floor as two armed bailiffs grabbed her arms. "THANE! HELP US! PLEASE, THANE! I'M YOUR SISTER!"

Corrine turned toward me, her face pale, her mask completely shattered. "Thane! You can't let them do this to me! I'm your mother! I gave you life!"

I sat in the front row, completely still, watching them being dragged through the iron holding doors without a single flicker of emotion in my eyes.
