Chapter 4 - THE RECKONING ON STAGE

The whisper spread through the three hundred guests like wildfire through dry grass.

His daughter?

Evelyn Hart is Thomas Mercer’s daughter?

Cassandra’s champagne glass trembled in her hand, the liquid sloshing over her manicured fingers. She stared at me, her eyes darting between my dress, my father, and the cold confidence in my face.

Richard’s face turned from pale white to a deep, mottled red. “Daughter? What kind of joke is this? Evelyn is an orphan! Her mother died twelve years ago—she has no family!”

“My mother was Eleanor Hart-Mercer,” I said, stepping past Richard toward the center stage where the microphone stood ready for his speech. My voice was clear, amplified by the hall’s acoustics. “And for three years, Richard, I let you believe I was alone because I wanted to know if you loved me for who I was, or for what I could give you.”

I looked at Cassandra, whose eyes were wide with rising terror.

“It turns out,” I continued, “you didn't love me at all. You loved the fact that you thought I had no one to defend me when you stole from my family’s holdings.”

“Security!” Richard roared, panic finally breaking his polished facade. He turned to the perimeter guards. “Remove these people! This is a private corporate event!”

Not a single guard moved.

Standing near the main doors was Sarah Vance, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Blackridge Police Department and three men in sharp black suits carrying tactical briefcases.

“I wouldn't bother, Mr. Vale,” Sarah Vance said smoothly, stepping onto the stage and placing a thick blue folder on the lectern. “I am Sarah Vance, general counsel for Mercer International and court-appointed receiver for Apex Capital.”

Richard stumbled back against the podium. “Apex? What does Apex have to do with this?”

“As of 9:00 PM tonight,” Sarah announced, her voice projected through the sound system so every investor in the room could hear every syllable, “Veil Urban defaulted on its forty-million-dollar credit facility due to illegal offshore transfers initiated by your office. Mercer International has acquired Apex’s position. We are exercising our right to freeze all Veil Urban operations effective immediately.”

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.

Several major investors—men who had been chatting with Richard fifteen minutes earlier—instantly pulled out their phones, frantically calling their brokers.

“This is insane!” Cassandra shrieked, taking a step toward me, her fake composure completely shattered. “You can't do this! The Hawthorne deal is ours! We signed the contract this morning!”

I turned to Cassandra, looking down at her diamond earrings—earrings paid for with funds taken from the finance committee account I had frozen.

“The Hawthorne contract required my signature as finance chair, Cassandra,” I said softly. “The signature you forged this afternoon while I was at my ultrasound appointment.”

I reached into my silk clutch, pulled out a flash drive, and laid it on the lectern beside Sarah’s legal folder.

“On this drive,” I told the room, “are the high-definition security recordings from the Blackridge General Hospital maternity wing at 2:13 PM today. It captures Richard Vale striking his seven-month-pregnant wife across the face when she refused to unfreeze his embezzled accounts.”

The ballroom erupted into chaos.
